New York: Baker & Godwin, 1863. Original Sewn Wrappers. Octavo. pp. 117, [1]. P. Chambers, Esq.,” on the front cover; additional owner names and bookplate inside the front wrapper and on the title page; contents clean--an unsophisticated copy. This is an extensive report, precinct by precinct, of the disturbances which virtually shut the city down for several days in mid-July, 1863. A remarkable contemporary account from police reports and eyewitness accounts of the most violent riots in the country’s history, almost exclusively a work-class response to the draft laws but also and perhaps most notably, a response to the recently emancipated African-Americans who were thought to be encroaching on an already tenuous job market. The Appendix describes instances of ast ... Read more

  • Edition: Limited Edition, one of 150 copies on paper
  • Quantity available: 1
Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1903. Limited Edition, one of 150 copies on paper. Vellum Binding. pp. 48. Half-sheet octavo. Printed in black Subiaco type with a single red initial on the opening page. One full page woodcut and several in-text woodcuts scattered throughout, all taken from the Wynkyn de Worde edition of 1496. Internally, this is a nearly fine copy. Bound as issued in limp vellum with typical toning; spine stamped in gold; all housed in recent custom-made clamshell. Inscribed and initialed by Sydney Cockerell, noted bibliophile and secretary of the Kelmscott Press. Cockerell was instrumental in Hornby's decision to have the Subiaco typeface made for the Ashendene Press, the first of two proprietary typefaces that Hornby had designed for the Press. Cockerell inscribes this to "Katie." It is quite likely that this is the bookbinder, Katharine Adams. She and Cockerell traveled in the same circles (she was friends with William Morris's daughters from childhood) and became and remained ... Read more

  • Edition: First Edition
  • Quantity available: 1
Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 1959. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good+ dust jacket. Octavo. pp. xii, 294, [1]. Full cloth; a fairly fresh copy with some minor toning to the edges of the textblock; dust jacket is splitting along the joints, but remains in one piece and is now protected and brightened by a mylar cover. A nice association copy of this title--belonged to the artist Charles Smith who was on faculty at the University of Virginia and who was the designer of this title for the Press. It bears his name in pencil on the front free endpaper. Additionally, there is a pencil notation below the colophon at the end of the book designating this as “Designer copy.” A nice and unusual association.
