Description:
In the Footsteps of Eve, with its carefully reasoned argument, challenges the conventional wisdom of half a century. It suggests that the true cradle of our species lies the fossil-rich limestone of South Africa rather than East African sites where Louis and Mary Leakey revolutionised modern paleoanthropology and where Don Johanson made the discovery of the ancient skeleton immortalised as Lucy. Dr.Lee Berger, a leader of the new generation of scientists whose recent discoveries have reshaped our ideas about human genesis, is an expert and engaging guide who offers a detailed yet always clear and readable overview of the quest for our origins, from Darwin to the present day. He makes a persuasive case for redrawing our ancient family tree. The reader joins him in deep caves where miner's head-lamp illuminate the long-buried bones that are the clues in the detective story that spanes more than three million years, and laboratories where patient researchers spend years assembling tiny shardes into the…

Description:
Continuing its policy of publishing extended explorations of Arthurian subjects, this eighth volume of Arthurian Literature contains four articles. Elizabeth Archibald addresses the reasons for the insertion of the story of Mordred's incestuous birth into many versions of the Arthurian legend (including Malory's) from the early 13th century on, and follows its development from the Vulgate Cycle to later Arthurian narratives. The use of irony to point up aspects of the Lancelot-Guinevere relationship in the prologue to Le Chavalier de la Charrete is explored by Jan Janssens. The early 13th-century Romance of Fergus is introduced and translated by D.D.R. Owen, who finds it of special interest not just because of its uniquely Scottish setting, but also because its use of parody foreshadows later medieval comedy; Scottish concerns also figure in Edward Donald Kennedy's discussion of the 15th-century chronicler John Hardyng's use of the story of Galahad's grail quest, and the changes he made.

Description:
This collection of new essays on Arthurian themes contains one on Layamon, two on Chrétien, and one on Victorian art. They are as follows: Oliver Goulden, `Erec et Enide': The Central Section The opening and closing sections of Erec et Enide have always attracted critical attention: Dr Goulden argues that the central section, often neglected, is crucial to our understanding of the poem.Claude Luttrell, The Arthurian Hunt with a White Bratchet:The theme of the hunt with a magical hound is found from the Mabinogion to Malory, and this essay charts its gradual change from the supernatural.W.R.J.Barron and Françoise Le Saux, Aspects of Layamon's Narrative Art: Layamon's Arthurian epic has been regarded as little more than a lively translation of Wace, here his different approach to narrative is examined, and shown to be an original aspect of his work.Christine Poulson, Arthurian Legend in Fine and Applied Art of the 19th and early 20th Centuries: A Catalogue of Artists:Following the bibliographies of…

Description:
The tenth volume of Arthurian Literature continues some ofthe themes of earlier issues, as well as exploring unfamiliar andcontroversial ground. The second part of CHRISTINE POULSON's survey of the Arthurian legend in 19th-century art is an analysisby subject of the works catalogued by artist in Arthurian Literature IX. A. H. W. SMITH provides a substantial update to MaryWildman's bibliography of modern Arthurian literature which appeared in Arthurian Literature II, adding not only recent works butalso many items missing from the earlier list. Mr Smith also contributesan article on Ponticus Virumnius and the text of Gildas, one of themore intriguing mysteries of Arthurian text history, and sets outVirumnius' claim to have seen a poem by Gildas which has since disappeared. ARMEL DIVERRES writes on the origins of Chretien de Troyes'Conte del Graal; he argues that we should seek the poet's inspiration in the crusading activities of Philip of Flanders, supporting his case with a careful examination of…

He offers astute analyses of the shape and import of evolutionary theory, indeterminacy, neuroscience, information theory and artificial intelligence. He also addresses deeper philosophical issues and the idea of nature itself. Then with characteristic clarity and verve, Barbour advances to the interconnected religious questions at he core of contemporary debate: Are humans free? Does religion itself evolve? Are we immortal? How does God act in nature?

Description:
The first book to examine the bizarre sequence of deaths--all attributed to the "Curse of Tutankhamun"--that occurred in London's 1920s West End.Throughout the 1920 and 1930s, London was gripped by the supposed curse of Tutankhamun, the Egyptian boy-king of antiquity, whose tomb was uncovered in 1923. Over the next few years more than 20 of those involved in the tomb's exhumation perished in strange, often terrifying circumstances, prompting the myth of the curse. With a blend of meticulous research and educated conjecture, historian Mark Beynon explores the strange circumstances surrounding a brutal murder at the Savoy Hotel, sinister happenings at Mayfair's Bath Club, a mysterious suicide at St. James's Court, and a series of inexplicable deaths linked to the British Museum, and uncovers a wealth of hitherto unpublished material that lays bare the truth behind these fatalities. Set against the backdrop of London's glittering 1920s and 30s, the author delves deep into the murky underworld of a…

Description:
There has been a tendency until recently to think of our history and ancestors in terms of epochs. Schoolbooks of the 1960s and 70s insisted that we were little more than savages until the civilized Romans came along; then the Romans became Christians and converted us too; then the Saxons arrived and we converted them; then the Vikings, and so-on up to the present day. History is, of course much more complicated than that model, and it is the survival against the odds of so much of our native pagan culture that has enabled the revival of Paganism as a thriving spiritual movement in modern times. Those pagan traditions, thanks in part to folklorists and archaeologists are now being uncovered and have provided the building blocks for the modern Pagan revival. This book takes the reader on a journey through the sacred landscape of England, visiting some of the lesser known sites of interest and exploring some of the stranger and often pagan aspects of folklore, music, tradition, literature, myth and…
