Prescott, Arizona. Very Good. Photo. German-born photographer Erwin Baer worked out of Prescott in the early 1900s where he was primarily known as a mine photographer. This photo is part of a set "Grand Canyon of the Colorado, Cataract Route, Via Ash Fork, Arizona." Havasu Canyon was then known as Cataract Canyon, and could be accessed by rail transport to Ash Fork. The image depicts five riders on horseback in front of a rock feature captioned as Mt Observation, or Huethawalee, presumably the current Mount Huethawali on the Esplanade. No date for this image, but most likely early 1900s. Some light wear to the card, 10" x 8" mount with 8 7/8" x 6 3/4" photo is clean with wonderful contrast and very little soiling. ; 8" x 10"; 1 pp .

This photo depicts four or five men hydraulic mining in Lynx Creek, Arizona. Hydraulic mining dramatically increased the effectiveness placer mining, and in this image you can see why. Pressurized water jets from a nozzle and four men work the large sluices. Long pipes, carrying water to the mining site, can be seen on the hillside above where the miners are working. Hydraulic mining in Lynx Creek began in 1868 and continued to be successful enterprise into the 1890s. Tombstone, AZ: S. C. Bagg. Good. 1889. Newspaper. An issue of the Tombstone prospector from November 22, 1889. Chips and tears with some loss of margins and corners and a few words. Pages are detached. 3/4 of a column is a larger font Reward Proclamation from the Office of the Governor advertising $500 for information leading to the capture of several prisoners who escaped a transport on November 2nd. The proclamation does not mention the prisoners by name, but this was the famous escape of the Apache Kid and several other Indians who killed their guards in the escape, known as the Kelvin Grade Massacre. The Apache Kid was never caught. Also of note in this issue is news on the Wham trial in Tucson, regarding the Wham Paymaster Robbery of an army paymaster and his soldiers. This little booklet was cheaply produced and usually is found in less than fine condition. Our copy is typical with cracking to spine with some material loss on spine. It appears someone glued the front wrapper poorly so it does not open fully. Interior however is clean. Booklet is about the gunmen and outlaws of Tombstone, Arizona. Full of typographical errors.
