Description:
Fordingbridge, Hamps.: Delphic Press, 1949- 1957 (pp. 1- 1112, adverts). Softcover, tan and olive, with black titles and decorations (two volumes with cello tape reinforced hinges, neat ms. notes). Shortly after W.W.II, Carey set himself to producing this ambitious jazz discography to be sold by subscription, but, as he says in the introduction to the first volume, ‘Whatever relief the unfortunate subscribers might feel at receiving this almost mythical volume it is as nought to that which I experience! I have been at the receiving end of the letters-- some merely hopeless, some jocular and some belligerent-- concerning the delay. This volume has had a very unhappy history and at times I shared the subscribers’ doubts as to whether it should ever appear.’ That these volumes did appear and did achieve the degree of completeness Carey hoped for is due in part to the work of McCarthy, who researched ‘coloured’ jazz, and Venables who researched ‘white’ jazz (a not… Read more

Toronto: Clarke Irwin, 1966. Limited edition, No. 794 of 1000, in two volumes (xxvi, 332; portfolio). Folio (28 cm.), in blue cloth, gilt titles to spine of text volume, matching slipcase. Twelve colour reproductions of Carr’s work tipped in to text volume, duplicates mounted on heavy card, loose in separate portfolio as issued. With a biographical sketch by Ira Dilworth and an introductory essay by Lauren Harris to accompany Carr’s journal entries, which begin in 1927 with her meeting Fred Varley in Vancouver on her way east by train. Even if you have never before seen a painting by Emily Carr nor read a word she has written, the twelve paintings reproduced here, together with her characteristically energetic and original writing, testify to her great talent, her independence of mind, and her determination to ‘work, work, work!’ This copy as new.

College Hill, Ohio: W.H. Ongley, 1859- 60. First edition (January- August, December 1859; February 1860). In paper-covered card binding with illustrations of mixed quality and condition, including nice engravings of scientific instruments (‘Spencer’s Large Trunnion Microscope’, ‘Marsh’s Challenge Oil Press’) and hand-coloured lithographs (‘People’s College’, Havana, NY, and dwarf pear tree); an engraving of Berckmans Nursery and the ‘Botanical Characteristics of Maize’; and others, less appealing (‘Winter Scene on the Catterskill’, for example, shows a human figure and a puzzled-looking bear, both apparently skating, and is badly browned and blotched; ‘Concord Grape’ is trimmed; one folding plate is torn at and ends at the fold. This periodical ‘devoted to scientific agriculture, horticulture, education, and improvement of rural taste’ captured a variety of practical and scientific topics-- e.g., ‘Niagara… Read more

Description:
London: Battersby, 1700. Third edition (Preface, advert., 326 pp., index). With one engraved plate showing six fish (missing an apparent second engraved plate), in contemporary calf, professionally rebacked. After Walton, perhaps the most important book on angling, here in its third edition. ‘The apest methods and ways, exactest rules, properest baits, and choicest experiments for the catching all manner of fresh water fish. Together with a brief discourse of fish-ponds, and not only the easiest, but most palatable ways of dressing of all sorts of fish, whether belonging to rivers or ponds; and the laws concerning angling, and the preservation of such fish.’ This copy shows every sign of having served its purpose-- it comes replete with fishing notes and previous owners’ signatures in an 18th century hand. Front corners are worn through, a small chip missing from the front cover, some loss (10 %) to the front endpapers, front edge of title papge chipped not affecting the text,… Read more

Description:

London: the Author, 1835. New edition (pp. [iv], 199, index, adverts). Small folio (19cm) in modern half morocco over red cloth, gilt titles and decoration. Cobbett’s remarks address the ‘labouring classes of this kingdom’ who, he believed, could establish and make themselves independent for food and rainment on as little as a quarter acre, and point out practical means whereby the economy, or management, of their households can be improved. So there is discussion of brewing beer, making bread, salting mutton, keeping bees, and fashioning hats and bonnets from dried native grasses. The Cottage Economy was Cobbett’s most successful and influential publication.  A hundred years later, in the midst of the great Depression, M. G. Kains published Five Acres and Independence, in effect an updated version of Cobbett, intending to point the way out of the disastrous economic circumstances of those times. The acreage was larger but the theme was the same. A clean, bright, attractive copy.

Description:
London: the Author, 1825. First edition (unpaginated, index, adverts). Two b&w plates (trenching a field, pruning). Tall octavo in faded blue-green cloth with impressed decorations; adverts at end promote Cobbett’s enterprises as seedsman and publisher. William Cobbett (1763- 1835) was an energetic political and social journalist and propagandist whose Political Register for many years urged reforms such as universal suffrage and opposed the more grasping policies of British governments in the years prior to the Reform Bill of 1832. Woodlands, comprising six hundred numbered paragraphs which describe the characteristics and best uses for all sorts of trees together with their propagation, fits with Cobbett’s Cottage Economy (1821), Treatise on Corn (1828), and The English Garden (1829) as a collection of self-help manuals aimed at the practical education and improvement of the lives of country people whom Cobbett (rightly) thought oppressed and discouraged by forces centred in London,… Read more

Boston: T.O. H. P. Burnham, 1864. First edition (pp. 224). Duodecima (16 cm) in brown decorative publisher’s cloth, gilt titles to spine, t.e.g. The anonymous Bostonian’s casual tour begins at Rouse’s Point, NY, situated in the northeasterly corner of the state where New York, Vermont, and Canada intersect, and carries on by rail to the west across the St. Lawrence lowlands, passing through Chateaugay, and fetches up first at Potsdam, a principal town of St. Lawrence County, that triangular slab of northern New York whose arcadian delights (as Wheeler might have said) he is most interested in exploring. Wheeler’s travels take him along river valleys into in some of the back country which climbs to the south of  Potsdam and Canton up into the Adirondacks. It is characteristic of Wheeler’s account that, in one breath, he expostulates (his word) on the beauty of the forest all around him and enthuses on the great harvests of timber to be snatched from it or foresees iron mines spread across… Read more

Description:
Peterborough, ON: Peterborough Historical Atlas Foundation, 1975. First edition (127). Many maps and illustrations reproduced from original sources. Folio in green cloth and impressed gilt titles. While in the 1870’s and 80’s many Ontario counties published historical atlases, not in small part to celebrate the successful businesses and rich farms of those settled parts of the province, subscribers to such an expensive undertaking in Peterborough County were few and no such celebratory account of the county’s success was produced. This illustrated atlas, published in Peterborough County a century later, is therefore the first to describe the County as it was in 1875 at fifty years of age. Winner in 1975 of Heritage Canada’s Communications Award and the Local History Award of the Canadian Historical Association, the Illustrated Historical Atlas of Peterborough County was produced in the format and style of its 19th century predecessors. London: H. Woodfall et al., 1768. Fourth edition, in seven volumes (pp. 427, index; 487, index; 493, index; 411, index; 499, index; 633, index; 655). Tall octavo (21 cm) original bindings in full calf, with various coats of arms and related symbols in quite fine copper-plate engravings; the complete text generally clean and tidy. Collins (1682?- 1760) was at once author, editor, publisher, and bookseller who produced a number of what today might be called ‘royalty’ books. A relatively early edition of a work begun in 1709- 12; there were many subsequent (one 19th century edition, a continuation by Brydges, ran to nine volumes and 5000 words). This social register was perhaps indicative of the aristocracy’s sense of secure privilege in the scheme of things-- it was a list on which one wanted to be found, and is still useful for genealogical searches. Debrett’s Peerage and Baronetage is a late-comer, the first edition having appeared in 1769. Offered here as an excellent candidate for… Read more

Saint John: McKillop & Johnston, 1876. First edition (135 pp.). Octavo, in brown publisher’s cloth, gilt titles to front cover. Boldly SIGNED on the ffep by its owner ‘Eugene D. Wood, River Hebert, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia’ and on the rear paste-down as ‘Capt. E. D. Wood/ Schr. Wandrian/ Boston’. Connolly intended this self-teacher for the ‘young and inexperienced Mariner’, and it seems Wood first acquired it as a young seaman, as his several signatures (There are four) show varying degrees of maturity. In the preface, somewhat worringly, Connolly requests ‘any of my friends who may find discrepancies in this work to tell or communicate with me, as some may have crept in; having no assistant, I have worked every question myself.’ His self-teacher includes instruction in such matters as longitude by chronometer, finding latitude by reduction of meridian, and parallel sailing. [London]: printed by E. and R. Nutt and sold by T. Cox at the corner of Swithin’s Alley, Cornhill, 1724.  First edition (pp. [iv], 208). Quarto (21 cm) in contemporary quarter leather over marbled paper, folding mapof Nottinghamshire by R [obert]. Morden. Cox was less the author of this volume (probably all or part of Volume IV in the series of six comprising descriptions of the counties) than a compiler or editor who worked from all the ‘best sources’ to produce a geographical description, together with the ecclesiastical, civil, natural, and literary history of each of the counties. Bookplate of John Bunn Clifton (fl. 1816).  Stains to upper corner of first few pages. Otherwise quite a good copy of a scarce title in the series.
