Description:
London: Macmillan, 1890. Nursery version of the classic story conceived to be read and 'cooed over' by younger readers. The two additional 'puzzle-pictures' or sketches that complement this copy are rare and precious examples of a game Carroll used to play with children - the object being to guess the animal before Carroll had finished drawing it. Presentation copy of the first published edition - inscribed by Lewis Carroll on the half title - with two original ink puzzle-pictures by Lewis Carroll tipped in. Quarto, bound in original pictorial boards, preserved in a deep blue, folding, cloth box, 257 mm x 200 mm., 75 pages, colour frontispiece and 3 full-page colour illustrations, numerous illustrations throughout; water damage affecting pages at front and end, endpapers browned and corners worn, otherwise a very good copy.

Description:
London: Bancroft & Co, no date. A delightful example of the work of renowned Czech illustrator and paper engineer, Vojtech Kubasta (1914 -1992). Originally born in Vienna, Kubasta trained as an architect in Prague yet barely practiced, his career interrupted by the invasion of Nazis in the Second World War. Kubašta turned his fine engineering skills towards the creation of pop-up books for children, revitalising three dimensional paper craft techniques that had drifted out of print, in part because of the bombing of the German printing presses but largely due to their expense. Kubašta's leadership and influence in the field secured his reputation and penetrated the difficult and complex politics of his era. He was granted permission to work for Walt Disney and inspired a resurgence of the ‘pop-up' format in both England and America. 'How Columbus Discovered America' was his first book. Said to be the first movable book published in Vojtech's Panascopic Model Series all of which were…

Montpellier, 1925. Limited Edition. -CRI ECRIT, JEAN COCTEAU Translating to a 'written cry', the poem's title holds the poet's call to God, placing it before us on the page. 'I will know where my friends are', the poet speaks, demandingly. 'They were too young to die. God, where have you put them?' A strong modern poem by Cocteau; printed with just four lines to a page, the wild, mad voice of the bereaved becomes louder. With a frontispiece by Henri de La Jonquière. Strictly limited to fifty copies on papier de Hollande numbered 1 through 50. This is…

Look at this cunning, cruel fellow, making ready to spring among the chickens... But he will be punished tomorrow I think, for I heard uncle Tom order his red coat to be ready for hunting...' The Kangaroo entry remains the highlight, ‘The Kangaroo is brought from New Holland: we have some in England in the Zoological Gardens. Their Nature is not at all savage.'
