Near Fine. pp17 An inaugural lecture delivered on 6 March 1962 concerning books on Asian history written in London. In near fine condition in printed card wrappers, minor signs of handling only. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. Large octavo in presentation binding of polished calf with two red morocco spine labels and the date at the tail of the spine. Scuffing to binding but otherwise a very good copy; all edges marbled; marbled endpapers, a little foxing to the preliminaries. Collation: pp506; cclvii; pp4 with foldout plate. J H Langston who has written the presentation inscription on the title page seems likely to be James Haughton Langston, farmer and M.P. for New Woodstock in Oxfordshire during the early 1840s when the presentation was made. No annotation. Admired nationally and beyond, Dalton had already suffered a stroke when this book was given him - despite his infirmity he continued his experimentation almost until he died in July 1844. 1840
