From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. This high quality booklet illustrating the biblical foundations of the philosophy of President Roosevelt was presented to delegates of the founding conference of the United Nations in 1945. Passages from the bible cited by the President are presented in biblical order. Bound in cream card wrappers with titles in English within a tissue paper dustjacket with titles in Russian. No marks or inscriptions. The book is in fine condition as it has been protected by a presentation envelope, one page and portrait photograph detached due to weak adhesive. This history of the regiment during the mid 20th century by Lieutenant-Colonel H D Chaplin is preceded by a Roll of Honour of those died during the Second World War. Very good in blue cloth with regimental crest to the upper cover, corners bumped, a couple of spots to the text block edge, the pages are crisp in a square binding; in a Good illustrated dust jacket, complete but worn to panels and edges, chipped to spine ends and corners. Good in pictorial card wrappers, rubbed to edges, spine creased but the binding is tight, browning and spotting to the paperstock. This book comes from the collection of Walter Stein, a British writer, literary critic and Catholic moral philosopher. Born in 1922, Stein was a Jewish refugee from pre-war Austria, educated by the Quakers in York and eventually a Catholic convert who worked in the Department of Extramural Studies at Leeds University. Very good paperback in bright coloured wrappers, upper cover lightly creased and edges stained. Inscribed by the author "for Alistair with best wishes Fred D'Aguiar 14.v.87". Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. This book comes from the private collection of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and his wife Mary who died recently at the age of 102. During his lifetime Harold Wilson kept the book in the Ashley Gardens mansion flat in Westminster that the couple shared until his death in 1995. After she lost her husband Mary Wilson continued to live in the couple's flat, surrounded by a lifetime's accumulation of books and memories until 2016. Near Fine 1935

London: John Murray, 1840. Presentation copy to the pioneer of atomic theory inscribed 'Presented to John Dalton by J.H. Langston Esq.r May 10th 1843'. Large octavo in presentation binding of polished calf with two red morocco spine labels and the date at the tail of the spine. Scuffing to binding but otherwise a very good copy; all edges marbled; marbled endpapers, a little foxing to the preliminaries. Collation: pp506; cclvii; pp4 with foldout plate. J H Langston who has written the presentation inscription on the title page seems likely to be James Haughton Langston, farmer and M.P. for New Woodstock in Oxfordshire during the early 1840s when the presentation was made. No annotation. Admired nationally and beyond, Dalton had already suffered a stroke when this book was given him - despite his infirmity he continued his experimentation almost until he died in July 1844. 1840

"As you could see, it meant a great deal to all those present to have our founder and inspirer there". The Open University 25th Anniversary card is in very good condition, lightly creased with a brown stain to the lower cover. This copy is neatly sympathetically rebacked in half calf over blue marbled boards with a blue leather spine label, edges rubbed but bright and clean. 'A Sir Colin Davis cordialement Norbert Moret, Londres 20 Octobre 1990', presentation copy of this very large spiral bound score from the composer Norbert Moret. This composition for the fiftieth anniversary of the Lucerne Festival features four songs for soprano and orchestra. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which he conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. Most of the scores are full size performance versions, several including this one very large indeed in order to accommodate the scoring of a post-Schoenberg orchestra. Colin Davis' full score of Knussen's first symphony written when the composer was just 15 and 'Commissioned by Rediffusion Television Limited'. The title page notes that the work was composed between May and November 1996 and then 'Revised October-December 1967.' Pink card wrappers, no annotations but one use of tippex to excise a marginal note. Knussen's has been described as 'a virtuosic essay in serialist aesthetics'.
