Description:
New York, 1942. Edges a trifle rubbed; slight soil. Printed card, approx. 3-1/4 X 5-3/8 in., printed by intaglio on one side only. Luther Greene (1910-1987) was a theatrical producer turned landscape designer. A flamboyant figure, he operated his 'exterior design' business out of his basement apartment on New York's East 58th St., near Sutton Place, where he had installed a nautical-themed "grotto" lined with some 12,000 seashells. Greene counted Salvador Dali among his friends and in 1942, Dali painted a portrait of Greene's first wife. Around the same time, Greene commissioned the artist to design his personal stationery, in which his name is formed by a variety of human figures. An uncommon piece of Dali ephemera.
