Daniel R. Goodloe, of North Carolina. Emancipation and the War. Compensation Essential to Peace and Civilization. In which it is made apparent that the resources of the country are three-fold greater than the emergency, which will call for little, if any, additional taxation. Goodloe argues - among other things - that "the amelioration of the black race can only be effected through the agency of the whites, - and, to secure this, fair compensation must be made for the deprivation of what Southern men regard as their property." A raw snapshot of uncensored discourse from the brink of war.8vo. Original printed wrappers, string bound. N.P. N.D. (1861). First Edition. Very Nice.

Béroalde de Verville. L'Histoire Veritable, ou Le Voyage des Princes Fortunez. Divisee en IIII. Entreprises. Illustrated with engraved title, folding woodcut map of the Grand Continent de Moso, and the Plan of the Palace of Secrets. 8vo. 20th century ¼-leather-backed marbled boards; spine with 5 raised bands; morocco label with gilt lettering on spine. A Paris, Chez Pierre Chevalier (1610). First Edition. According to Paul Lacroix, in his Recherches bibliographiques of 1880, it is thought that this book was suppressed by the authorities shortly after publication, resulting in many copies having their titles excised, making the present copy very rare.Béroalde's great novel tells of the 'Fortunate Princes,' their voyage to the Great Continent of Moso and neighboring islands, and their adventures there. It is an alchemical novel in its characters, puns, anagrams, and themes. It is a steganographic novel in the sense that it delights in the revelation of hidden things. It is an imaginary voyage to an…

Second Edition of this comprehensive treatise on geomancy.Illustrated with numerous diagrams, schematic woodcuts and tables in text, as well as 10 plates, 1 of which is an engraved single-page plate, while the other 9 are fold-out woodcut diagrams or letterpress tables, some bound to face each other; plus large engraved printer's device with an armillary sphere on title-page; a few decorative woodcut head-pieces and initials. The Opus Geomantiae Completum "is divided into three parts devoted respectively to the theory, practice and questions taken from previous authors. The theory is largely astrological. Instead of jotting down four rows of dots at random, a wheel with sixteen projections is spun or whirled in order to obtain one of the sixteen geomantic figures. Fludd is cited more than once, also Arabic authors like Geber and Aomar, medieval Latins like…

1710. 1st Edition . No Binding. Very Good. Found at Doway, after the taking of that town. Translated from the French Copy. Printed at Cologne by Peter Marteau. Small 8vo. 47 pages. Disbound. With half title. London, Printed in the Year 1710. Moore 189. Note: Variously attributed to Pierre Des Maiseaux, Daniel Defoe, and Arthur Maynwaring. For authorship controversy see Moore 189 and Snyder in Literatur als Kritik des Lebens (Heidelberg, 1975) p.123. Moore suggests that Des Maiseaux was only responsible for the French translation, but this undoubtedly appeared first - it is possible that he was the author. The Cologne imprint of that edition, however, is probably false. French version: Lettre dun gentilhomme de la cour de St. Germain, . . . 1710, with the (false?) imprint A Cologne, chez Pierre Marteau, probably in fact a translation from the English. Some soiling and darkening of paper, o/w Very Nice
