Chinese ballads were first discovered among the documents recovered from Dunhuang; thus the ballad was a form of Chinese folk expression from at least the 8th century and most likely earlier. The present volume presents a compilation of some 200 folk ballads extant in Taiwan in the mid twentieth century. Each ballad title is listed in both Chinese characters and Romanized form, followed by a detailed English summary of the tale being told, offering insights into Chinese folk morality, wisdom, foibles and superstition.
