She was famous in her day, and an influence on modern literature in many ways; she also worked tirelessly on relief during the Great Famine. Here are two lovely volumes (II and III only) of one of Miss Edgeworth's most popular works. "Early Lessons" was originally published in 1801; this sequel in 1822. Paris: Baudry's European Library, 1846. First published in 1796, this was Edgeworth's first children's book. It remained popular throughout the 19th Century. This is a Very Good set of a Later Printing. "Six Parts Complete in Three Volumes" with marbled paper-covered boards, red eather spine and tips. All page edges are also marbled. Clean texts; very bright and clear, but with some occasional spotting. 150 pages, 159 pages, and 169 pages. An attractive little set, and quite readable today.. Later Printing. Quarter-Bound. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition of the Irish writer's "Works," issued in thirteen volumes; this is Volume Thirteen only. Rather uncommon, especially in octavo format. Marbled paper-covered boards with leather tips and spine; black label, rules and lettering in gilt. Clean text; 454 pages. Very bright, clear, and supple. Little or no foxing; half-inch long split to top corner of spine. Typical rubbing and scuffing to the leather, but still attractive. London: Routledge, Warnes, & Routledge, 1859. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition Thus. Originally published in three volumes (1803), this is "A New Edition, with Illustrations." The Preface, by husband Richard Lovell Edgeworth, promotes Maria's progressive ideas on popular education. An attractive mid-Victorian small octavo, with marbled covers and endpapers, leather tips, and a highly decorative leather spine stamped in gold. Clean text; 485 pages. One signature towards the midpoint stands a bit proud, due to a split. The covers are rubbed at the margins but the book remains attractive. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Ediution Thus. New York: Harper & Bros, 1856. This is a nice, and complete, mid-Victorian set of Edgeworth's works, issued seven years after her death. All ten volumes are in Very Good condition. The cloth binding is nicely blindstamped and decorative, filled with gilt on the spine. The original color may have been a green or the typical publisher's purple of the time; now all volumes are an even dark hue closer to umber. The text is clean and unmarked, bright and generally free of foxing; pages are a bit stiff to turn. Several volumes have a small, contemporary, Canadian bookseller's label on the paste-down. New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1850. Harper was the main American publisher of Edgeworth's works during the first three quarters of the 19th Century. They were often published in sets, which can be rather difficult to describe. This is either Volume 9 (the spine designation) of "Twenty Volumes Bound in Ten" or it is "Volumes XVII and XVIII" or possibly "Volume XVII." All of these designations appear on the title page. The first title page indicates the contents as "Harrington" and "Thoughts on Bores" (231 pages). The second title page is for "Ormond" which consists of 302 pages.This is a Very Good copy. "Patronage" was first published in 1813; this is a reprint of the Third Edition which was issued two years later, Volume VII only of a ten-volume set. Not common. Green cloth binding, with exceptionally attractive stamping in black; titling in gilt on the spine. Clean text; 504 pages. Frontis engraving, as well as one on the half-title. Textblock is very bright an clear. This book shows almost no wear, with only hints of a rub at the margins. It would be graded Fine except that the hinges are cracked at front and back; both are holding well. It presents exceptionally well., and would be well-served by some minor reinforcement..
