Von Stalhein was rescued with others after apparently being shipwrecked. Biggles flies to Australia to investigate exactly what von Stalhein was up to. Searching the islands and atolls of northwest Australia, Biggles and Ginger settle on a lagoon for the night. Now that the Second World War had ended, he could use good pilots in a new force he is forming as Assistant Commissioner at Scotland Yard. This force would be used to combat flying crooks. The formation of a force would take some time, and there was a pressing matter to deal with and that is where our heroes come in. Biggles would be offered the rank of Detective-Sergeant. Raymond informs Biggles of a spate of air related robberies involving the taking of various jewels. Biggles and the gang agree to take the job. Biggles soon realises that in order to have carried out the crimes, the planes involved would have had to have had exceptional speed and range. Biggles used to called his father 'Pa' and when he was a toddler called his father's brother, Dick, 'Dickpa' - and the name has stuck ever since. Biggles and Algy find Dickpa's house in a state of siege. Whilst exploring in Brazil, Dickpa had struck the trail of some ancient treasure, but his villainous porters found out and turned against him. Escaping to England, they have followed him and have him trapped in his own house. Biggles escapes from the house with a plan. Returning with a rented aircraft, Dickpa and Algy are rescued from the house and together with Biggles' old Flight Sergeant, Smyth, they all travel to South America on a treasure hunt. Air Commodore Raymond sends Biggles and Co. to investigate an apparent case of piracy in the Indian Ocean - in the region of the Nicobar Islands. Biggles has his doubts as to accuracy of the victim's story, (a Mr. Tidore), and he soon discovers that the piracy was really a dispute between smugglers. The rival smugglers murder Mr. Tidore and investigations trace their base, which is an island that was formerly occupied by the Japanese. The man behind the rival smugglers is known as ""The Colonel"". He is an ex-American officer, and he has access to the supplies of petrol that the Japanese abandoned on the island base at the end of the Second World War. A reconnaissance mission to the island leaves Biggles, Bertie and Ginger stranded after a storm hits unexpectedly.
