London: Helvetis Press, 2014. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Hardback, illustrated covers. 30.5 × 21.5cm, 156pp. Signed and dedicated by Felicity Aston to the title page. What does it sound like when breath freezes? How do you start a car when it is so cold that fuel turns to wax? How do people live without the sun for half of the year? What is it like to use river ice as a road and what happens when it melts? Curiosity about the day-to-day reality of life at the extremes of climate inspired a 36,000 kilometre journey that chased the onset of winter from London, across Scandinavia and Siberia, to the Pole of Cold - the coldest permanently inhabited place in the world. This collection of stunning photographs and evocative stories gathered during the journey provides insight into the social, cultural and physical implications of winter as perceived by communities that live in some of the harshest environments on the planet. London: Allen Lane, 1998. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16cm, xlv + 624pp. Signed and dated directly to the title page by Niall Ferguson. The Pity of War makes a simple and provocative argument: the human atrocity known as the Great War was entirely England's fault. According to Niall Ferguson, England entered into war based on naive assumptions of German aims, thereby transforming a Continental conflict into a world war, which it then badly mishandled, necessitating American involvement. The war was not inevitable, Ferguson argues, but rather was the result of the mistaken decisions of individuals who would later claim to have been in the grip of huge impersonal forces. That the war was wicked, horrific, and inhuman is memorialized in part by the poetry of men like Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, but also by cold statistics. Indeed, more British soldiers were killed in the first day of the Battle… Read More

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 2006. 1st edition (proof) . Paperback. Very Good. Uncorrected Proof / Advanced Reader's Edition, paperback. 23.5 × 15.5cm, 479pp. Signed and dated directly to the title page by Richard Ford (September 2006). It is fall, 2000 and Frank Bascombe has arrived at a state of optimistic pragmatism that he calls the Permanent Period of life. Epic mistakes have already been made, dreams downsized, and Frank reflects that now at least there are fewer opportunities left in life to get things wrong. But the tranquillity he anticipated is not to be. In fact, as Thanksgiving dinner with his children and first wife nears, the Permanent Period proves as full of possibility as life had ever been. In his third Frank Bascombe novel, Richard Ford contemplates the human character with wry precision. Graceful, expansive, filled with pathos but irresistibly funny, "The Lay of the Land" is a modern American masterpiece. This copy was signed in September 2006, the official… Read More
