Milan: Sindicato Nazionale Fascista, 1941. A massive survey of Italian advertising at the begining of the war, published with text in Italian and German as a special supplement to the periodical La Pubblicità d'Italia. A tour de force of book design and an encyclopedia of fascist aesthetic. Rare with most copies seemingly destroyed in the War.

Rome: Federazione italiana nazionale fascista per la lotta contro la tuberculosi, 1934. A fine copy of a book where the imaginative design is in dramatic contrast to the dreary contents. A rare book, with OCLC listing only one copy in the U.S. at the International Labor Office in Washington D.C.

1938. FASCISM. Bozzetti di addobbo dell'urbe per la visita del Führer. Die Ausschmueckungsentwuerfe der Stadt Roms fuer den Besuch des Fuehrers. Folio, 316 x 321 mm., publisher's cloth. Rome: n.p., 1938. An extremely pompous tome published to celebrate Hitler's visit to Rome. Perhaps the bad taste is a reflection of the visitor rather than the hosts. Signed by the governor of Rome, Piero Colonna, with his calling card laid in. OCLC lists only the Wolfsonian and Cleveland Public Library in the U.S. plus 5 in Europe.

Folio, 270 x 220 mm., bound in publisher's decorative paper boards in original photographic dust jacket, preserved in a new folding box. Rome: Pressedienst des Generalkommandos della G.I.L., 1940. A scarce Italian photobook given over to glorifying fascist youth and their glorious leader, Mussolini. As is often the case with these books, the dramatic photography and layout display an imagination, which was totally lacking in the subject matter. Crack in the front board, otherwise a fine copy. OCLC lists only one copy, in the Bayerische Staatsbibiothek.

Folio, 415 x 300 mm, bound in original wrappers. Moscow: Editions d'Etat des Beaux-Arts, 1936. A fine copy of a typical issue of this landmark periodical, this one devoted to collective farms in Kiev. As Martin Parr says "from 1930-1940 URSS en Construction employed the best Soviet photo-journalists and graphic designers. Amongst the photographers were Max Alpert, Arkadi Shaikhet, Georgi Zeima, Boris Ignatovich, Semen Fridland and Georgi Shaikhet. Designers included El Lissitzky, Sophie Kueppers, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Varvara Stepanova, and Nikolai Troshin who designed this issue and over forty others. The exquisite jewel-like etchings illustrating the poetry of Ferrand were etched and printed by Haass, who studied with Hayter. Los Angeles: The Lapis Press, 1993. The splendid coloured aquatints which Francis produced to illustrate Guyotat's text were among the last things he did before his death, and are characteristic of his work. One of an edition of 45 copies signed by Guyotat and Francis.

Novarra: Officine dell'Istituto Geografico de Agostini, 1936. A stunning example of fascist book design. Published by the Italian Foreign Ministry, this alphabet was presumably issued as propaganda for children of diplomats and foreign service employees to demonstrate Italy's superiority. Slight rubbing to the edges of the boards, but overall a fine copy. A book that is of great rarity with OCLC listing only copies at Princeton and Northwestern.

[2], 21-504 pp., illustrated with ten lithographic plates including one coloured. 8vo, 200 x 120 mm., gilt stamped three-quarter leather over marbled paper. Philadelphia: Edward Young, 1859. Third edition, the "Merchants' Edition." A comprehensive survey of commercial activity in Philadelphia on the eve of the Civil War. The book was written in an attempt to demonstrate the importance of Philadelphia as a commercial and manufacturing center and the tremendous amount of information contained in it attests to its achieving that goal. Despite erratic numbering at the beginning, this copy is complete as published. A fine copy.

The exhibition was held in October/November of 1942 at the Coordinating Council of French Relief Societies and was organized by André Breton. Duchamp created a front cover with perforated bullet-holes comprised of a close-up of the wall of Kurt Seligmann's barn at Sugar Loaf, New York. The bullet holes in the barn and the front cover are by the hand of Duchamp, who originally had fired five shots with a rifle into the side of Seligmann's barn. A complete set of these monographs on the Soviet economy designed by Jiri Friml and Karel Teige and with some particularly attractive isotypes. In a remarkable state of preservation, with just minor damage to the foot of two spines. Complete sets are extremely rare, with OCLC listing just 12 numbers at Getty and The Wolfsonian.

Kyoto: Yamada Unsodo, 1906. An early twentieth century pattern book of textile designs with most pages having three designs. The designs are the work of Furuya Korin, a student of Kamisaka Sekka, who is best known for his combining the style of the Japanese Rimpa school with European Art Nouveau. In fine condition. OCLC lists only Harvard and the Metropolitan Museum.
