Written when the author was in prison in Germany between July and December 1944 after firing a pistol during an argument with his wife and the manuscript smuggled out when he was released. Not so much a diary as memoirs of his life in Nazi Germany. He was perhaps better-known for his novels "Little Man, What Now?" and "Alone in Berlin". The complete manuscript was long thought to have been lost, but was published in Germany in 2009 as "In meinem fremden Land: Gefangnistagebuch 1944", and here translated by Allan Blunden. 274pp..
