Description:
Aldershot. This archive centers on the Centenary of the British Army Physical Training Corps (A.P.T.C.) at Aldershot and one of its most famous sons, Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, Corps Commandant from 1946-1960. Spanning 1958 to 1962, the archive includes: two books signed by Montgomery, two holograph, signed letters from Montgomery, a signed note on the verso of an invitation, and an original photograph. The books are a 1960 Centenary publication about the A.P.T.C. and a 1960 Presentation of the Freedom of the Borough of Aldershot to the A.P.T.C. Both bindings feature the same marbled endpapers and the CorpsÂ’ gilt crossed swords device on the front cover. The Centenary is strikingly bound in full red morocco with an elaborate glassine jacket featuring a web motif and housed in a red cloth case lined with matching marbled paper. Profusely illustrated, the Centenary opens with a facsimile holograph Forward by Montgomery opposite his frontispiece portrait. Montgomery offers the volume… Read More

Description:
New York: E. F. Foley, 1932. Photograph. This is a scarce and compelling inter-war photograph portrait of Winston S. Churchill captured by E. F. Foley, signed by both the photographer and Churchill. The gelatin silver print image measures 7.75 x 5.625 inches (19.69 x 14.29 cm) on a 10 x 8 inch (25.4 x 20.32 cm) sheet. Foley signed just below the lower right corner of the image “E. F. Foley” in pencil. Churchill signed directly below Foley in ink “Winston S. Churchill 1932”. The only other notation is “25” in pencil on the verso. Condition is excellent, the print exceptionally clear and well-preserved with no appreciable flaws. The custom, archival conservation framing features 15 x 12.75 black and gold painted wood, the window double matted lending further depth to the photo, protected beneath Optimum Museum Acrylic. We have owned this print for nearly 30 years, before which it long resided in another noteworthy Churchill collection. In 1929, Churchill lost both his ministerial salary and a… Read More

Description:
London: David Nutt, 1913. First edition. Hardcover. This is an elusive prize - the first edition, first printing, first binding state of Robert Frosts first published book, signed by the author. First published in England in 1913, the publication history of A Boys Will is complicated by the fact that the reported 1,000 first edition sheets saw two issues in four variant bindings. These many iterations were bound and sold over a period of three decades, owing in part to the bankruptcy of the original publisher (Nutt) and sale of remaining first edition sheets during the subsequent liquidation. It is estimated that no more than 350 copies and plausibly as few as 284 were issued thus, in the publishers original shiny bronzed brown pebbled cloth used to bind the first books that appeared. Known to Frost bibliographers and collectors as binding A, these copies were bound by the Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Co. before 1 April 1913. Rendering this copy of binding A even more compelling than scarcity warrants… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915. First U.S. edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed, American first edition, first printing of the authorÂ’s first published book. This edition saw a first printing of 750 copies in April 1915, one month after the American edition of North of Boston (reversing the publication order of the British first editions). Condition is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square, tight, and beautifully clean, with deep color, and vivid gilt. Trivial shelf wear appears confined to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting. Age-toning is mild and the sole previous ownership mark is a neatly inked name on the front free endpaper. Second state of the first printing is confirmed by absence of the misspelling in the last line on page 14. The early state jacket features “75 Cents Net” on the spine and front face. Loss is minor, confined to the spine ends, flap fold corners, a small spot on the lower left rear face,… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916. First edition, first state. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, first state of FrostÂ’s third published book. Mountain Interval is FrostÂ’s first book for which the U.S. edition takes precedence, both A BoyÂ’s Will and North of Boston having been first published in Great Britain. “Mountain Interval, which appeared in November 1916, offered readers some of his finest poems, such as “Birches,” “Out, Out--,” “The Hill Wife,” and “An Old ManÂ’s Winter Night.” (ANB) The volume opens with the poem “The Road Not Taken.” It was in 1916 that Frost was made Phi Beta Kappa poet at Harvard and elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. This copy is in good plus condition. First state is confirmed by repetition of the sixth line on p.88 and the word 'Come,' instead of 'Gone,' on p.93. (Crane A4, p.21) Condition is very good plus. The blue cloth binding remains square and tight with deep, unfaded color and bright gilt.… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915. First U.S. edition. Hardcover. This is a jacketed first American edition, first state, of the authorÂ’s first published book. This first American edition was published in a first printing of 750 copies in April 1915, one month after the American edition of North of Boston. The American publication order reversed that of the preceding British publications of 1913 and 1914, respectively. First state is confirmed by the misprint “Aind” on the final line of p. 14, corroborated by white (as opposed to buff) endpapers. (See Crane, A2.1, p.11). Both glassine and printed dust jackets on tan paper have been reported for the first edition. This dust jacket is the earliest of the three states identified by Clymer & Green, with the “75 Cents” price on the spine and front cover and a blank rear cover. Condition of the book is good plus in a good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square and tight with bright gilt, but modestly soiled with some mottling at the… Read More

Description:
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1934. Second American Edition. Hardcover. This second American edition of the authors first published book is inscribed by Frost, apparently to his American publisher's secretary in four lines on the front free endpaper recto: "For Helen Lynch | from | Robert Frost | April 8 1935". This second American edition, published in 1934, was bound in tan linen cloth with a gilt-stamped brown front cover illustration panel (intertwined scythes) and brown spine title panel. The tan dust jacket features an ivy-covered fence post illustration repeated from the title page. The book is in fine condition, the jacket better than very good. The binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and no discernible wear. The contents are bright and clean. The sole previous ownership mark is the signature of the recipient Helen D. Lynch inked on the upper front pastedown opposite the front free endpaper Frost inscribed to her. We are informed, but unable to definitively… Read More

Description:
London: David Nutt, 1914. First edition, first issue, final binding state. Hardcover. This first edition, first issue, final binding state (“Binding F”) of the authorÂ’s second published book is in very good plus condition. The green cloth binding is tight and square with sharp corners and only light shelf wear confined to extremities. The spine is moderately but uniformly toned, the spine gilt still clearly legible. The book is clearly unread; there are uncut signatures beginning at the Contents page. We find no spotting or previous ownership marks. The contents show modest age-toning and customary transfer browning to the pastedowns and facing endpapers from the pastedown glue. The binding is protected beneath a clear, removable mylar cover. Frost and his family moved to Little Iddens in early April, 1914, occupying a two-story cottage with a vegetable garden and orchards of apple, plum, and pear. Mid-May 1914 saw FrostÂ’s second published book, North of Boston, which bolstered his newly minted… Read More

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1919. Second, limited American edition and first illustrated edition. Hardcover. This is the second American edition of the authorÂ’s second published book, a striking limited edition published in 1919, four years after the American first trade edition. Opening with the famous poems “The Pasture” and “Mending Wall,” North of Boston bolstered FrostÂ’s newly minted literary reputation and precipitated his return to the United States from England. In 1919, the American publisher issued this second and limited edition of 500 copies. The binding featured a dark green linen spine over lighter green, paper-covered boards with a gilt-stamped spine and gilt front panel with title and author printed in black. The contents feature fourteen illustrations by James Chapin and are printed on heavy, watermarked, laid, linen-rag paper with untrimmed fore and bottom edges.
