Second edition. 8vo, pp246. A very good copy; recently rebound to style in quarter cloth, with genuine marble paper boards and paper label. Second edition: first published earlier the same year. 'Containing remarks upon the principles of picturesque beauty; the different kinds of prints; and the characters of the most noted masters: illustrated by criticisms on particular pieces: to which are added, some cautions that may be useful in collecting prints'. Gilpin was on hand to set standards, and to give definitions: there are four pages of 'Explanation of Terms' before the main text, including this of the word 'picturesque': "a term expressive of the peculiar kind of beauty, which is agreeable in a picture". Oliver Goldsmith (10 November 1728 - 4 April 1774) was an Irish novelist, playwright and poet. He is best known for his novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield' (1766), his pastoral poem 'The Deserted Village' (1770), and his plays 'The Good-Natur'd Man' (1768) and 'She Stoops to Conquer' (1771, first performed in 1773). He is also thought to have written the classic children's tale 'The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes' (1765).

John Murray, London, 1845, 184pp. bound in recent half red calf, 'Journal of a Residence Among the Negroes in the West Indies' by Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1845. Lewis owned a considerable property in Jamaica. 'Philip Musgrave; or, Memoirs of a Church of England Missionary in the North American Colonies' edited by Reverend J Abbott, published in 1846. This work is a collection of vaguely fictionalized thoughts and anecdotes about his time in the North-American colonies as a missionary for the Church of England. Matthew Lewis was a novelist best known for his Gothic novel 'The Monk'. Joseph Abbott was a Church of England clergyman and author, who was also well known for his work 'Memoranda of a Settler in Lower Canada'.
