Anglo-American Archaeologist Evan Hadingham explores the mystery of Britain's ancient carvings. Scattered all over the countryside of Britain are hundreds of mysterious prehistoric rock carvings –strange abstract circles, branching lines, hollows and zig zags. Their mysteries (who made them, when and why) is the focus of the book. As well as looking to solve these riddles, the author also describes the folklore and superstitions that surround them.

Haining's fascinating book examines whether the source of Mary Shelley's famous book was in fact an eccentric English scientist called Andrew Crosse. In 1938, on the eve of war, a Nazi expedition set out through British India on a mission sponsored by SS chief Heinrich Himmler himself. Its aim was to find the origins of the Aryan race , high in the sacred mountains of Tibet. Thousands of extraordinary photos were taken, some shown here for the first time. And the inevitable hostility between the Nazis and the British foreshadowed the horrific conflict to come. A fascinating story.

A very nice copy of the 1947 Subscriber's Edition. A study of the history of Western idealism in the Platonic and Neoplatonic traditions as continued by outstanding creative thinkers from St. Thomas Aquinas to Ralph Waldo Emerson. Hall looks at a range of profoundly influential philosophers and mystics. Book is in very good condition. Pages are bright and clean, just a little light tanning at extremities. Front FEP has a small ownership signature and the official original stamp of the Aquarian Book Service (see photos). A couple of brown marks on FEP also. Otherwise pages very nice, no notes or underlining etc. Not ex library. Binding is tight. Boards are excellent. Unclipped DJ is very nice, a few brown marks (tape residue possibly but no stickiness) and some age related shelf wear, but very good, with cover colours bright and clear. A very nice first edition of occultist, writer and theologian Hall's work on the Old Testament, an expansion of part of his earlier work 'Keys to Bible Interpretation'. This copy is unusually good condition. Pages are clean with none of the notes which mar many copies. Natural tanning to page extremities throughout, but no other markings except a neat stamp of the book's UK seller (The Aquarian Book Service) on FEP (see photo). Binding totally tight. Boards are clean and unmarked. DJ is unclipped and -again - unmarked by notes which are often seen on the flaps. There is minor shelf wear and a little tanning (for example to spine), and a small mark on cover (possibly from a stained finger or two, potentially removable, were haven't tried), otherwise a first rate DJ. A nice copy of the 2nd edition (1947) of Manly Hall's supplement to his Secret Teachings of All Ages. In it, he looks to develop a philosophic code based on thousands of years of esoteric knowledge. Pages are remarkably good: save for a very small neat inscription on FEP, all pages are bright and clean. No notes, tanning or foxing. Rare as such for this edition. Binding is tight. Boards are clean, bright and uncrumpled. DJ is intact and original colours nicely retained. There are a couple of small missing segments (see photos ), one at top left of cover into top off spine, the other at base of rear cover. Other than that, some rubbing, creasing and shelf wear but overall still good (and the presence of the DJ in any state in this edition is rare). A wonderful copy. A substantial work by famous author on such themes, Manly P Hall. The book explores themes underlying ancient mythology, philosophy, and religion. A huge range of topics. There is confusion on book site about the editions around this time, and the (often stock) photos that accompany them. This is the Golden Anniversary Reduced Facsimile of 1977, with all black & white plates. A bit of the confusion comes as the text promises colour plates, but this is not the case in this edition. Please see all photos here which are of this actual edition on sale. The pages are excellent: bright and clean and uncreased. Three minor points to mention: there is an old small bookshop label on the FEP (see photos) this is almost off and will probably come away if desired. Well known Canadian mystic, author and astrologer Hall here looks at the core underpinning aspects of philosophy, in a work whose subtitle is the 'direction of mental activity in the science of perfection'! This is a very nice copy of the 2nd (enlarged) edition of 1949. Pages are remarkably crisp and bright, by far the best we have seen in this edition. There is a small inscription on front FEP, and a nice original small Theosophical Bookshop sticker (see photos). Otherwise, no markings, notes, foxing or tanning at all. Binding is totally tight, blue boards are in an excellent state. DJ is very good: unclipped, some spine sun fading, and a little shelf wear but generally very good indeed. A very nice copy of Manly Hall's commentary and translation of the famous esoteric document. The original manuscript of the mysterious work is at Troyes, and features a range of Kabbalistic, masonic and alchemical mysteries. Its original authorship and provenance is somewhat debated. Hall translated it in the 1930s, and this is the 3rd edition, from 1949. Hall's efforts are a translation and a commentary. Pages are first rate: clean and bright, just with the FEP having the slightest tanning. Otherwise really clear. No notes or foxing. A small neat stamp of the original UK bookseller (The Aquarian Book Service) is on FEP. Binding is tight. DJ is unclipped, and overwhelmingly complete save for the odd nibbling, shelf wear and minor creasing mostly restricted to the usual surfaces (see photos). Back cover slightly rubber. An excellent copy of the 2nd edition (1947) of Hall's illustrated study of the great religious and philosophical principles underlying the concepts of astrology. Pages are excellent: bright, unmarked, no inscriptions, no foxing or tanning. All illustrations present. Unusually good condition for this copy. Binding totally tight. Orange wraps clean and bright, just the most minor curl at the top corner. Spine is very good, again this is often fraying in this edition. The best copy of this edition we have seen. Historian Trevor Hall looks at the locked room death of eminent Victorian and psychic researcher Edmund Gurney. Hall examines his death and a connected mystery around fakery in psychic circles. Ray Hammond considers whether the potential creation, manipulation and alteration of human life by science is a step toward control of our own evolution. Hammond wrote the screenplay for the BBC drama documentary on the same theme. A very nice copy. Pages are clean and bright with no foxing or inscriptions. Ironically, the only flaw is a neat stamp (presumably from a shop) saying 'damaged' (see photo). However having been through the book a few times it seems not only all in place, but in perfect state! First edition of Cornish miner and poet John Harris's 1866 book 'Shakspere's Shrine'. Book is very good. Pages are intact and completely tightly in place. Hardly any most minor age wear at all on pages. Feb has a date written neatly, and a date stamp (see photos), and title page has a small segment missing at top. Binding its tight. Covers are clean with just normal age wear and a tiny amount of wear at junction of spine and front cover (no impact on book integrity). REP has minute sticker of presumably the original binder. History professor Hartmann examines some of the most celebrated murderesses of the nineteenth century. She looks at thirteen French and English women accused of stabbing, shooting, beating and poisoning their victims. The book looks at the murderesses with the filter of women and their role in the social history of the times. Case studies include Madeleine Smith, Florence Maybrick, and Florence Bravo.

A fascinating, lively and yet scholarly examination of all the items associated with a child's nursery. Touted as the first study of its sort. Illustrations of 125 objects add to the experience. And the authors ask some great questions, including: when was the first pram made; did you know the feeding bottle has a 4,000 year old history; why were rattles made by the finest silver craftsmen of their day? An excellent read.
