Set of 19 loose sheets (39.5 x 29.9 cm), with drawings and printings mounted. = A very nice collection of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) illustrations, including original artwork. Three sheets are dated, viz. 12 März 1908; 25 Mai 1908; and 20 April 1910 - the first and last with the place name Wien (Vienna). Captions are in various hands. for instance, the one dated 25 Mai 1908 is by Gisela Haas; the one dated 20 April 1910 is by Anna Fiala; both women (about whom little else is known) show to be skilful artists, catching the essence of contemporary art. All with minimal marginal wear, but mostly clean. A very good, varied set.

Original printed wrappers bound in. = With several new species. Mainly on Unionidae, but also and continental gastropods. Published in the society's Abhandlungen. Provenance: Stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto and front wrapper. A very good copy in a good, solid binding. Bound copies are rare.

Barcelona, 1929 [REPRINT, Museu de Zoologia, 1991]. 8vo. xxvii, 491 pp.; 187 text figures, 37 plates. Laminated pictorial boards. = Important but very rare publication on the non-marine molluscs of the northeasternmost part of the Iberian peninsula. A facsimile of the original, but on much better paper. The figures on the plates are enlarged copies of those in the text. However, this reprint contains two more plates than the 1929 edition. Top of spine a bit bumped. Stamp on title, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Later blind cloth. = A rarely seen work, published in the series, Nova Guinea, vol. XV(1). With on the title page a handwritten dedication by the author, the German (later American) malacologist Fritz Haas (1886-1969). With in the top margin of the title page a stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020. )Boards spotted at edges, otherwise good.

New York, NY, American Museum of Natural History, 1955. Large 8vo (27.0 x 17.6 cm). 210 pp., 30 plates with explanatory text. Original printed wrappers. = Describing a rich and varied fauna. Written by the Austria born American malacologist Otto Henry Haas (1887-1976) and published in the Museum's Bulletin. Inscribed in the front wrapper top margin by (or for) the American geologist and malacologist John Wyatt Durham (1907-1996) above a tiny stamp: compliments of the author. On the half-title, in a different hand - perhaps that of Durham -, Oxfordien / Lower Malm, precising the Mount Hermon stratigraphy. Short title hand-written in the spine top; very slight shelf wear, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Original full colour pictorial laminated boards. = This is an offprint from Esperiana, Buchreihe der Entomologie, volume 8. A series named after Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) with a portrait of Esper on p. 2. This work by the German entomologist Hermann Heinrich Hacker includes fine illustrations (including many type specimens) and excellent descriptions of new species and poorly known species of noctuid moths from the Levante (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Asian part of Egypt), but is useful for adjacent parts of Turkey, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of the Mediterranan too. An excellent, clean, and unmarked copy.

Vienna, Sumptibus Joannis Pauli Kraus, 1782. 4to (28.4 x 21.0 cm). 16 pp.; five very large, folded engraved plates. Contemporary marbled wrappers. = Rare early treatise on Slovenian Alpine plants by the French-Austrian botanist, geologist and medical doctor Balthasar Hacquet (1739-1815). This is the true first edition. A second edition with 31 pages was published later in the same year (vide Stafleu and Cowan), another edition does not mention Wappler as printer. All are very rare. One plate includes a dragonfly (Odonata). The engraving of a large thistle, by Joseph Pallnstorff, is magnificent. Uncut. Fore-edges therefore uneven. Some scattered spotting; slightly soiled; a small, vague dampstain in the gutter; otherwise a very good, unmarked copy. Nissen BBI, 771; Stafleu and Cowan, 2232.

Disbound. = A rarely seen, well-illustrated monograph written by the British zoologist, anemone specialist and (later) ethnographer and anthropologist Alfred Cort Haddon (1855-1940), and the Irish biologist Alice Shackleton. Extracted from a bound volume of the Society's Transactions. Very good, clean.

Dublin, The Royal Dublin Society, 1889-1891. Two parts in two. 4to (27.4 x 22.0 cm). 129 pp. [65; 64]; ten lithographed plates [7; 3] of which two magnificantly coloured and the others tinted. Disbound. = A rarely seen complete copy of this important and well-illustrated monograph written by the British zoologist, anemone specialist and (later) ethnographer and anthropologist Alfred Cort Haddon (1855-1940). "His first publications were an Introduction to the Study of Embryology in 1887, and various papers on marine biology, which led to his expedition to the Torres Strait Islands to study coral reefs and marine zoology, and while thus engaged he first became attracted to anthropology" (Wikipedia). Both parts extracted from a bound volume of the Society's Transactions. Very good, clean copies.

Original blue cloth with gilt title on the spine and front board. Boards with bevelled edges. Marbled edges. = Fine copy of the first edition of the well-illustrated travelogue by this famous German biologist. It includes several of Haeckel's "signature" marine invertebrate engravings. Small inscription on the front free endpaper, otherwise clean, unmarked. A near mint copy. Rare in this state.

Contempory cloth with green morroco label with gilt title on spine. = Two early, illustrated papers by Haeckel, already showing what a gifted artist he was. Contained in the complete volume 15 of Zeitschrift für wissensschaftliche Zoologie, published by Carl Theodor von Siebold and Albert von Kölliker. There are several other articles by different authors and 37 more lithographed plates in this volume. This copy is - apart from some very minor chipping on the top of the spine - in a very good condition.

Dedicated to Ernst von Siebold. This work, based on the study of the European common jellyfish or moon jellyfish, on development and teratology, may be regarded as a continuation of his famous Monographie und System der Medusen, published in 1879-1880 (See DSB). Uncut. Edges a bit frayed, some light, marginal spotting, otherwise a very good copy. DSB 6, pp. 6-11.
