Wien, not published, ca. 1908-1910. Set of 19 loose sheets (39.5 x 29.9 cm), with drawings and printings mounted. = A very nice collection of Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) illustrations, including original artwork. Three sheets are dated, viz. 12 März 1908; 25 Mai 1908; and 20 April 1910 - the first and last with the place name Wien (Vienna). Captions are in various hands. for instance, the one dated 25 Mai 1908 is by Gisela Haas; the one dated 20 April 1910 is by Anna Fiala; both women (about whom little else is known) show to be skilful artists, catching the essence of contemporary art. All with minimal marginal wear, but mostly clean. A very good, varied set.

On the half-title, in a different hand - perhaps that of Durham -, Oxfordien / Lower Malm, precising the Mount Hermon stratigraphy. Original full colour pictorial laminated boards. = This is an offprint from Esperiana, Buchreihe der Entomologie, volume 8. A series named after Eugen Johann Christoph Esper (1742-1810) with a portrait of Esper on p. 2. This work by the German entomologist Hermann Heinrich Hacker includes fine illustrations (including many type specimens) and excellent descriptions of new species and poorly known species of noctuid moths from the Levante (Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and the Asian part of Egypt), but is useful for adjacent parts of Turkey, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and parts of the Mediterranan too. An excellent, clean, and unmarked copy.

Vienna, Sumptibus Joannis Pauli Kraus, 1782. 4to (28.4 x 21.0 cm). 16 pp.; five very large, folded engraved plates. Contemporary marbled wrappers. = Rare early treatise on Slovenian Alpine plants by the French-Austrian botanist, geologist and medical doctor Balthasar Hacquet (1739-1815). This is the true first edition. A second edition with 31 pages was published later in the same year (vide Stafleu and Cowan), another edition does not mention Wappler as printer. All are very rare. One plate includes a dragonfly (Odonata). The engraving of a large thistle, by Joseph Pallnstorff, is magnificent. Uncut. Fore-edges therefore uneven. Some scattered spotting; slightly soiled; a small, vague dampstain in the gutter; otherwise a very good, unmarked copy. Nissen BBI, 771; Stafleu and Cowan, 2232.

Disbound. = A rarely seen complete copy of this important and well-illustrated monograph written by the British zoologist, anemone specialist and (later) ethnographer and anthropologist Alfred Cort Haddon (1855-1940). "His first publications were an Introduction to the Study of Embryology in 1887, and various papers on marine biology, which led to his expedition to the Torres Strait Islands to study coral reefs and marine zoology, and while thus engaged he first became attracted to anthropology" (Wikipedia). Both parts extracted from a bound volume of the Society's Transactions. Very good, clean copies.
