A very nice etching of one of the famous events during the English Reformation. John Clark Ridpath (1840-1900) was an American educator, historian and editor. He was a descendant (through his mother) of Samuel Matthews, a colonial governor of Virginia. In 1869, he was elected Professor of English Literature at Asbury College, where he served as faculty member and later vice-president, and was largely the originator of the measures by which that institution was placed under the patronage of Washington C. DePauw, from which it takes its current name (DePauw University). His volumes of history were popular and reissued many times by Merrill & Baker (1890-1897) and The Jones Brothers Publishing Co. (Cincinnati, Ohio 1914-1916) and sold by subscription.

Charles Christopher Trowbridge was a mayor of Detroit and a notable ethnographer of American Indians in the Michigan Territory. The Rev. Dr. Beardsley appears to be Eben Edwards Beardsley, the rector of St. Thomas' Church, New Haven, CT, and the President of the House of Deputies at the 33rd Episcopal General Convention. A nice copy of this scarce pamphlet with a notable association.

Samuel Hart (1845-1917) was the Secretary of the House of [Episcopal] Bishops, dean of the Berkeley Divinity School, the (un)official “middle way” seminary of the Episcopal Church at Middletown, Connecticut, and Custodian of the Standard Book of Common Prayer. In 1886, he became the third custodian of the Standard Book of Common Prayer. In 1892, he became secretary of the House of Bishops. In 1898, he became the fourth historiographer of the Episcopal Church. He served in all three of these offices until his death. (In 1893, he was elected Bishop of Vermont, but he declined the office.)He received a B.A. from Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, in 1866, where he later taught widely and was made professor of Latin in 1883.
