A very nice etching of one of the famous events during the English Reformation. John Clark Ridpath (1840-1900) was an American educator, historian and editor. He was a descendant (through his mother) of Samuel Matthews, a colonial governor of Virginia. In 1869, he was elected Professor of English Literature at Asbury College, where he served as faculty member and later vice-president, and was largely the originator of the measures by which that institution was placed under the patronage of Washington C. DePauw, from which it takes its current name (DePauw University). His volumes of history were popular and reissued many times by Merrill & Baker (1890-1897) and The Jones Brothers Publishing Co. (Cincinnati, Ohio 1914-1916) and sold by subscription.
