This copy is formerly the property of crime connoisseur and mystery magazine publisher Iwan Morelius, with his characteristic and discreet ink notation to top right of cover, later forming part of the comprehensive collection of Jon Gilbert (pencilled signature within). His encyclopaedic guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. Not in Gilbert. Hemlock is a U.S. Government 'counter-assassin' whose targets are known as 'sanctions'. "A witty 007-type fable of danger, mayhem and treachery" [Boston Globe]. Basis for the classic 1975 movie directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. This copy is from the prize-winning Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive, assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled ownership within.

Fine in near fine price-clipped jacket, with a barely-visible repaired tear to upper. In his foreword, author Conrad Frost credits James Bond author Ian Fleming for the eventual publication of this book (on the Silver Jubilee), a version of the text having been serialised in 1953 by Kemsley Newspapers with enthusiastic encouragement of their Foreign Manager Ian Fleming, under whom Frost was assigned at the time. Frost was a Mercury Features writer, producing the Ace O'Hara comic strip for the Daily Dispatch (1954-64), which bears a striking resemblance to the later James Bond strips drawn by John McLusky. A largely unknown piece of 'Bondiana', this copy is part of the comprehensive James Bond collection assembled by Jon Gilbert (bookplate within). Most uncommon in this format; this is the only such copy we have encountered. 'A visually exciting, deeply informative, insightful and interesting look into 007's universe' (from a contemporary review). John Cork, a member of the Ian Fleming Foundation and a respected authority on 007-lore, has also co-written Bond Girls are Forever (2003) and The James Bond Encyclopaedia (2007). Original dark blue buckram-covered boards with gilt titles to upper. A fine copy of a scarce book. A first-hand account of Ian Fleming's war service, written by his opposite number and close friend Commander Alan N. Schneider, U.S.N.R., the personal assistant to the U.S. Head of Intelligence in London, Commodore Tully Shelley [Cdr. Fleming was the assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence, Admiral John Godfrey]. The volume contains some previously unpublished photographs of Fleming, accompanied by Schneider, mostly taken in Northern France while overseeing commando operations of 30 Assault Units (two of which appear in the bibliography). An unusual publication to find in bound form. Scarce thus. 'A monthly review of literature' featuring contributions from the above authors, including the first appearance of Ian Fleming's article on his friend and fellow thriller writer Raymond Chandler, who had died earlier that year.
