Description:
Spain, ca. 1470. 172 x 122 mm. (6 5/8 x 4 7/8"). Single column, 17 lines in a rounded gothic script. Rubrics in red, each leaf with several one-line initials in gold on blue or red ground with gold stippling, and ONE TO FOUR MULTI-LINE INITIALS painted red, blue, purple, and/or green with white highlighting on painted gold ground, each large initial with highly decorative and colorful extenders of various lengths and shapes, most with acanthus leaves, floral sprays, and other floral elements with gold vine-stem. Vellum slightly yellowed and with a little offsetting, some leaves with a small dampstain to one edge, various instances of moderate rust-staining along the gutter and occasional marginal soiling, but the specimens mostly quite clean, the colors bright, and the excellent illumination more than making up for any of the minor defects. From a Spanish Book of Hours or related devotional work, these leaves are exuberantly decorated with colorful initials and extenders by a top-rate atelier.… Read more

Northern France [probably Paris], ca. 1460s. 130 x 98 mm. (5 1/8 x 3 7/8"). Single column, recto with 18 lines of text in a very fine gothic book hand. Text in red, blue, and gold, "KL" in blue with white tracery and on a burnished gold ground and infilled with ivy leaves in blue, orange, and white, BOTH SIDES WITH A PANEL BORDER, EACH WITH A ROUNDEL DEPICTING THE ZODIAC SIGN AND LABOR OF THE MONTH, placed amidst a tangle of acanthus leaves in blue, red, and brushed gold. Recto with a little general soiling, the roundel lightly abraided, and a noticeable smudge to the top of the panel border, but the verso quite clean with just a little discoloration to margins and the "KL" offset from facing page, the roundel on this side in excellent condition with just one or two very small scratches. Description:
France, second half of 13th century. 90 x 65 mm. (3 1/2 x 2 1/2"). Single column, 12 lines in a pleasing gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, each leaf with variable numbers of line fillers composed of a small gold square with red or blue pigment on either side, and multiple one-line initials in gilt on blue or gold ground with white tracery, many leaves also with at least one two-line initial, and a few with multi-line initials, these also gilt on blue and pink ground with white tracery. Vellum a bit toned and soiled, gilt a little rubbed in places, occasional small stains or smudges and other isolated minor blemishes, but on the whole the leaves still very pretty, the paint quite bright, and the charm still there. The present leaves probably come from a Psalter-Hours, a personal prayer book that eventually gave way to the Book of Hours, the manuscript companion that would become the vehicle of choice for personal devotions during the late Middle Ages. Although measuring only 90 mm. tall, these… Read more

Description:
ca. 1920. Image: 150 x 225 mm. (5 7/8 x 8 7/8"); frame: 255 x 330 mm. (10 x 13"). Attractively matted and framed. A BEAUTIFUL FULL-PAGE ILLUMINATION DEPICTING THE FOUR SEASONS, personified and surrounding a central figure with halo and wings, decorative surroundings incorporating elemental motifs reminiscent of stained glass techniques, embellished with gilt, the whole enclosed by a decorative gilt border. Signed by the artist in the lower right corner. See: Cynthia Norman, "Biography of da Loria (Belle Elkin) Mitchell Norman," reproduced on askART. IN PRISTINE CONDITION. This is a memorable illuminated scene from a versatile artist of the Arts & Crafts movement, a woman lauded by her contemporaries, and with a style highly reminiscent of that of William Blake. Although Norman worked in numerous media, including oils, watercolor, needlework, and murals, she was best known for her exquisite illuminations. The present work is an outstanding example of her fine work in that medium, possibly executed… Read more

Paris, ca. 1440. 222 x 162 mm. (8 3/4 x 6 3/8"). Single column, 16 lines of text, in a beautiful gothic book hand. WITH LOVELY RINCEAU BORDERS on one or both sides, these composed of delicately twining hairline stems bearing red and blue blossoms and FEATURING A PROFUSION OF BURNISHED GOLD IVY LEAVES. IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION, the vellum extraordinarily bright, fresh, and clean, and WITH MARGINS AS VAST AS ONE COULD EVER HOPE FOR. Commissioned for use by a woman (as indicated by the feminine form in the "Obsecro te"), the Book of Hours from which these leaves come could only have been a manuscript of great beauty prepared for a household of very substantial wealth and importance. The level of achievement manifested here in both the scribal hand and the execution of the illuminated decoration clearly indicates that some of the best artisans money could buy were at work on this book, and only a powerful family could afford to pay their price. Further corroboration of this fact is seen in the… Read more

Description:
France, early 15th century. 150 x 108 mm. (5 7/8 x 4 1/4"). Single column, 17 lines in a gothic book hand. Rubrics in red, one leaf with a pink and blue line-filler with white tracery and gold bezant, each leaf with two or more one-line gold initials on blue and pink ground, and two or more two-line initials in blue and pink on a gold ground with tendrils emanating from the corners, terminating in gilt ivy leaves and blue flowers. Vellum faintly soiled, one leaf with an early and very small repair at the corner of the text, a few trivial thumb smudges, but these faults all quite trivial, and on the whole very well preserved. While Book of Hours leaves in Latin appear frequently on the market, individual leaves in French are rather more difficult to come by. The present leaves provide an excellent opportunity to study the Medieval form of this language in a religious context, in addition to being lovely specimens in themselves.
