Signed. 8vo; in the publisher's black cloth binding with labels, and with dustjacket; xvi, [2], 3-85; pages largely unopend.~~This copy inscribed by illustrator Clare Leighton to her then lover, Henry Noel Brailsford. Ms. Leighton provided the woodcut frontispiece and decorations for this book. Noel Brailsford is considered to be the most prolific British left-wing journalist of the first half of the 20th century, and was one of the founders of the Men's League for Women's Suffage [see wiki]. Mr. Brailslford and Clare Leighton lived together for nearly a decade starting in 1928; he was still married to his first wife, and she denied him a divorce. In 1939 Ms. Leighton left England to reside permanently in the United State; she never married.~~The presentation from Clare Leighton: "To Noel from Clare | --a hurried offering | December 1929.". A book of 'Lonesome is...' statements, referencing aspects of country life in mountainous Appalachia, and illustrating the different aspects of 'lonesome', but not lonely, country life. Two folio volumes (17 1/4" x 13 1/4); in the publisher's red cloth bindings, gorgeously stamped in black and gilt; [iv], [1], 2-422 pages, followed by Tables des Gravures (the final leaf of which has a crease); [iv], [1], 2-373 pages, followed by Tables des Gravures; each volume with 50 full page plates by Dore, all protected with tissue guards; the first tissue guard in Volume I has minor corner loss; the plates are almost all clean of foxing and superb.~~Volume I has some minor rippling to the bottom edge of the last quarter or so of the textblock, no affecting the text or the plates.~~Volume I has been rebacked in red japanese tisues with the original spine laid down, and Volume II has had small patches to the top and bottom of the front gutter.~~Altogether a magnificent set in two volumes.~~~. Very Good binding.
