Although complete in itself this item, volume XIV of the Dugdale Society publications, is volume II only and thereby covers the later marriages period of 1754 to 1812, the earlier period having been covered in volume I. The very detailed index of persons here covers both volumes I and I and runs to a total of 63pp.

This is the first issue of the poetry quarterly started by the three poets named, which continued for ten issues and which featured many latterly important poets. This first issue is very conservatively, indeed rather boringly, printed in marked contrast to the approach taken later (see item 798). It includes work by Charles Tomlinson, Francis Berry and David Holbrook as well as by the editors and others, poems and some criticism included. ... ... Thomas Nelson, London, 1934, first edition; 4to, 180 x 230mm; pp viii, 9-177; fawn cloth boards titled and decorated gilt on the front, green cloth spine; illustrated with 181 photographs of acting in the various plays or ballets in the book; very good copy. ... ... ... Jelf was a senior judge, Master of the Supreme Court at the time of writing and later King's Remembrancer, and the book consists of a series of ballets to be performed by children and which were in fact performed extensively all over England by the time of publication. The stories are not, however, scripts as the performances were intended to be given with a reader while the children mime and dance to what is being read although, as Jelf ponts out, it's fairly straightforward to repurpose the content for the children to speak the lines.

Nevinson was a British war correspondent and a campaigning journalist during the second Boer War and WWI. Earlier he had been a missionary at Toynbee Hall in London's East End, later formally becoming a socialist, a member of the Social Democratic Federation, the first British organised socialist party, and a friend of Petr Kropotkin and of Edward Carpenter. He was noted for his reports on slavery in Angola in 1904-1905 where he uncovered and followed a trail to the plantation of Sao Tome. He later reported on India for the Manchester Guardian. Not surprisingly, he supported the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and was strongly hostile to the systems of persecution and suppression under Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin.

Royal Artillery Institutional Priinting House, Woolwish, 1921, first edition; 8vo, 155 x 247mm; pp [x], 255; blue-grey wrappers printed black; very slightly faded in parts and with some rubbing at the foot of the spine but otherwise in good, clean firm condition. ... ... ... ... ... The work lists officers and other ranks who received honours and gives details of the relevant occasions; it also lists those killed or wounded while serving in the 29th Divisional Artillery, gives an account of the doings of that entity during WWI, and records officers' services for the period from the Gallipoli landings (April 25, 1915) to the start of the Armistice (November 11, 1918). There is a frontispiece showing the "card of honour" advising recipients of the intention to record their name and deed in the records. Note that this item is an instance of the original book, printed in 1921, rather than of the later reprints of the 2000s.

Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimre and London, 1971, first edition; 8vo, pp xv, 136; brown linen boards, pictorial dust wrapper with a couple of minor tears and some dust marking but otherwise a very good copy. The work traces the evolution of the system in England and Wales whereby public access to private holdings of land has been facilitated and asks whether a system drawing on the lessons learned might useful pertain in the US. Of course, given the date of publication, the book makes no comment on the subsequent steady erosion of the rights there set out and the increasing privatisation and consequent management control of what are clearly properly public spaces in terms of use particularly in urban areas.

The first impression appeared just over a year - August 1938 - from the outbreak of war and gives a good background to the political developments of the time leading inexorably to the outbreak of hostilities.The work examines fascism in various countries including in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Latin America, the US, the UK and the British Empire, and in the USSR. The author was barrister, later becoming an MP for various constituencies and serving in the House of Commons until 1974 when he went to the House of Lords, becoming Lord Chancellor in the Wilson and Callaghan governments.

Printed for C Davis and others, London, 1751, 1752 and 1754, first editions; three volumes, 8vo, pp lv, 388, xxvii, 420, xxiv, 470, [i, being a publisher's advertisement for Jortin's "Discourses"]; contemporary speckled calf, bindings worn and all joints cracked although still holding mostly firmly; lacks all spine labels; some light browning of the text pages but generally clean and firm internally. ... ... ... ... ... Jortin's "Remarks" is perhaps his most important work, being highly acclaimed on the publication of the opening volume. The work eventually ran to five volumes, the last volume being published posthumously in 1773. It was admired and respected by Edward Gibbon and considered by some "the most significant Anglican ecclesiastical history of the eighteenth century". Jortin's style was lively and readable and his approach a learned and latitudinarian one and from the viewpoint of Christian humanism.
