A suite of etchings by Robert Jacks. Melbourne: Port Jackson Press Australia, 2004. Folio, gilt-embossed green oxford buckram clamshell box measuring 395 x 290mm containing title sheet and nine original etchings each 380 x 280mm, each signed and titled by the artist. Edition limited to thirty copies. ‘Ulysses by James Joyce has been the source of inspiration and titles for paintings, by Robert Jacks, since 1965. It’s been a long romance. Hence, when he was invited to create a suite of prints to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ulysses, it was as if Jacks had received a personal handwritten invitation from the Misses Morkan, for their annual Christmas dinner at what is now the leading literary address in the world, 15 Usher’s Island’ - Jeff Makin, from the title sheet to the folio. The year of 2004 saw the centenary celebration of Bloomsday, the twenty four hours of the 16th June 1904, during which the events of Joyce’s masterwork Ulysses were staged. Robert Jacks was invited to… Read More

New York : Robert Jacks, 1977 [remade in Harcourt, Victoria, 2007]. Folio, blue card hand-stamped wrappers, staple bound with cloth tape, ten leaves of blue card, each punched with a hole at a different point. Upon flicking through, the series of holes forms a spiral, one of Jacks’ emblems. Printed an edition of 5 copies, signed, numbered and titled by the artist on the upper wrapper. Originally created in New York with the title Spiral Drawing in an anticipated edition of 50 copies, in fact only 10 copies were made. Spiral Drawing was one of a series of three 'punched' books, Circular Drawing, Spiral Drawing and Top - Bottom which were also issued bound as a set of the three volumes with the title in manuscript 'who's afraid of red, yellow and blue'. This set was issued in an edition of 6 copies. In 2007, Jacks recreated his original 1977 publication at his studio in Harcourt, in an edition of 5 copies. Rare.   References: ANDERSON, Peter. New York: the artist, 1966-1971 [Melbourne: the artist, 2008]. Folio, commercial binder folder, thirteen leaves offset printed of geometric statements which articulate the design of an object. Produced in a small unspecified edition. An experimental piece where the artist mathematically describes a physical object. An unfinished work 1966 - 1971 was originally exhibited at the Whitney Museum Artists Resource Centre, New York, and A Space Gallery, Toronto, as part of an installation. It was intended as an edition of 100 copies, although far fewer were produced, they were given away to visitors to allow them to own a piece of the installation, if they so chose. This is one of five copies Jacks made in 2008 recreating the original in a very low edition.   References: ANDERSON, Peter. The artist’s books of Robert Jacks.
