Description:
1919. Kurt Wolff Verlag, Muenchen, 1919. 8vo. Publisher's beige cloth, titled in maroon to upper cover and spine; pp. [viii], 189, [3]; a very good copy, sound, with some light uniform toning to paper stock and top edge, a little faded along the spine. First edition. Kafka's second short story collection (after Betrachtung or "Contemplation" in 1912) published in 1919 by Kurt Wolff. The collection consists of 14 short stories in the absurdist/surrealist vein for which Kafka became known — the 15th story "The Bucket Rider" was removed on Kafka's request prior to publication. Due to what can only be described as organizational difficulties within the publishing house, and the lingering effects of the war, the publication of the book stretched out over several years, to the exasperation of an increasingly irate Kafka, if rumours (and surviving correspondence) are to be believed. The dedication to his father is of particular interest, given some of the oedipal themes expressed…

1847. London, Madden & Co., 1847. 8vo. Contemporary green half-calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt, ornamented in blind; pp. viii, 436; lithographic portrait frontispiece; extremities a little rubbed, very light occasional spotting initially, else an excellent copy. Among those whom he met in Britain was the Wheelton family of Meopham (Kent), mentioned on p. 359 of his account. A very nice copy of this famous work. First edition. Published just one year after On the Road, The Dharma Bums is also an autobiographical novel from Kerouac, telling the story of two ebullient young men searching for Truth the Zen way: marathon wine-drinking bouts, poetry jam sessions, 'yabyum' in San Francisco's Bohemia, and embracing solitude in the high Sierras. The main characters are narrator Ray Smith (based on Kerouac) and Japhy Ryder, based on the poet and essayist Gary Snyder, who was instrumental in Kerouac's introduction to Buddhism in the mid-1950s. The book…

First edition in the first issue dust wrapper, distinguished by the five word Kerouac quote on the front flap. Description:
London, Edward Stanford, 1881. Large colour-lithographic folding map (158 by 94cm) dissected into 30 segments, linen-backed and folding back into the original cloth-covered slip-case with printed label on the front; apart from light rubbing to front cover, in excellent condition. A wonderful copy of this Special Edition of the 'reduced' version of Conder & Kitchener's huge Map of Western Palestine, which consists of 26 sheets and is ordinarily found bound in atlas format. The present example of the map is heavily revised to illustrate the drainage of the Mountain Ranges in the eastern part of the map, "according to 'An Introduction to the Survey of Western Palestine' by Trelawney Sanders." Sanders did several adaptations of this map, one of which included ancient geographical information. This version of the map is particularly poignant because of the linkage between water resources, food production and settlement location. Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener,…

[Johannesburg, Union Publications for the author [1938]. 8vO. Original printed wrappers; pp. 23, a few illustrations after photographs, ink spot and number in crayon to front cover, a few tiny marginal flaws to wrappers, these as well minimally toned along margins, internally very good. This is an exceedingly rare publication of the recollections of service in the Palestine police force by a young South African Zionist during 1938 in the midst of the Arab revolt against the British and terrorist acts against Jewish settlers. Kluk's accounts are sharply observed vignettes of the daily grind, violence and terror during that period. He is trying to further the understanding of and communication between settlers and the British Mandate officials. The only other copy we were able to locate is in the British Library.

Original colour-printed self-wrappers with expert restorations at the edges; pp. [16]; colour-illustrated throughout; a little toning and spotting in places; a good copy of a very rare survival. First edition in German for the children of German Bolsheviks working in the USSR. Boris Kornilov was a Soviet poet who was murdered during Stalin's purges, three years after the publication of this children's book warning of dental consequences resulting from ursine overindulgence in honey. Rotov was a Soviet artist, cartoonist and illustrator who worked for Pravda and other prestigious Soviet publications. As his case confirms, talent attracted danger in those days. He was sent to the GULAG in 1940; however, to be rehabilitated after Stalin's death in 1954. COPAC lists two copies, at the V&A, and in Cambridge (Russian edition).
