Tiny paper label with script number on lower spines. = Written by the German historian, theologist, and court preacher Johann Ernst Rudolph, Kaeuffer ((Käuffer) (1793-1865), who lived and worked in Dresden. The three parts, being the result of over ten years of study, comprise a general introduction, and East Asian (chiefly Chinese, Indian and Indonesian) history up to 500 BC, up to 1000 AD, and up to 1860. Some scattered, light spotting, otherwise very good, unmarked. Original uniform printed wrappers and belly bands. = A rare, complete set of this profusely illustrated monograph on European fossil deer, written by the German palaeontologist Hans-Dietrich Kahlke (1924-2017). The third and rarest part was announced on the belly bands of parts I and II as containing "die übrigen Skelett-Teile". This was changed into "Die postkranialen Skelettreste" when published. A printed strip around the cover (present for all three parts) states "Mit Teil III ... ist das werk abgeschlossen". Suggestions that this work should be complete in two parts are, therefore, incorrect. An excellent set.

Binding a bit weak; tear in the top margin of the first few text leaves; otherwise a very good copy.

Original brown pebbled cloth, richly embossed in gilt and black. = First volume of the most important Dutch geographical journal with fine, often mulit-coloured maps, in particular of the Dutch West and East Indies, and the Netherlands itself. However, in this volume also maps of the Nile region, with the itinery of Lady Alexandrine Pieternella Françoise Tinne (1835-1869). Lady Tinne was one of the first woman-explorers in history. She was murdered in Lybia. Another interesting paper contains the detailed census of the Dutch population in 1869 and 1874, contrasted with some older data, arranged by municipality, religion, types of dwelling, etc. Old library stamp on the front free endpaper and title, otherwise a very good clean copy in the original official binding. Rare in this state.

Original brown pebbled cloth, richly embossed in gilt and black. = Sixth volume of the most important Dutch geographical journal with fine, often mulit-coloured maps, in particular of the Dutch West Indies, and the Netherlands itself. The most interesting maps are one of the island of Curaçao, along with a detailed map of its capital, Willemstad, and two long, multi-folded maps of Amsterdam, Haarlem, and surroundings, before and after the digging of the Noordzeekanaal, with a detailed map of the new town of IJmuiden. Other papers of interest include, for instance a historical and etymological paper on Frisian place names. Pictorial dustjacket. = One of the first mineralogical and geological descriptions of a single mountain. Originally published in Latin and here in the German translation with an introduction by F. Roesli and several annotations and comments by other scholars. With a signed, hand-written dedication by Roesli to the Swiss geologist Eugène Wegmann (1896-1982). A rare publication, in particular with the dust jacket still present. Edges of dustjacket with small chips and a small part taped, otherwise in excellent condition.

Large 4to (33.5 x 25.5 cm). xiii, 420 pp.; 96 text engravings, 20 folded profiles, maps and lithographed plates, mostly coloured and several very large (size up to 32 x 100 cm), seven folded charts and tables. Later half cloth with paper label on the spine. = Very rare first and only edition on the geology, hydrology and palaeontology of the "Wiener Becken", and a masterpiece of its kind. Together with Eduard Suess, Karrer was the founder of palaeontology in Austria. Several plates were drawn by Suess. Plate I - a long, quadruple-folded, hand-coloured sheet - shows various views of the mountain, a map of the area, and a profile from the mountain all the way down to Vienna, which greatly depended upon the clean water from the mountain.
