Osaka, Kyoto, & Edo: Kawachiya kashichi et al., December 1810. First edition, complete with the rare atlas. "The most important Japanese orthopedic work was published in 1810 by Bunken Kagami (1755-1819) with the title Seikotsu shinsho. Based on Chinese medical science, it presented a system of surgical treatment to cure injuries to bone, principally of fractures and dislocations, with instructions on how to stop bleeding and to bind or immobilize the injured part by bandaging. The value of materia medica in the orthopedic practice of that time in Japan was recognized by a section on the compounding of prescriptions. The… Read More

Description:
Eight full-page drawings & one illus. in the text. 17 folding leaves. 8vo (243 x 165 mm.), orig. blue semi-stiff wrappers (some dampstaining to upper portion of each leaf). [Japan: mid-Edo]. Kagawa (1683-1755), a member of the medical family dynasty, studied in Kyoto with Ryozan Goto and Jinsai Ito, from whom he learned moxibustion and the therapeutic value of the waters of hot springs. Kagawa established the successful Ippondo medical school and was one of the most enthusiastic practitioners of moxibustion of his time. There is another manuscript of this text at Kyoto University, attributed to Kagawa. Some of the illustrations are very different. The introductory remarks describe the importance of the precise placement of the moxa on the skin, how to measure the placements based on distance from certain bones or joints of the body, and the various techniques and occasions for moxibustion applications. Following this, the text precisely describes the moxibustion locations on the body and how to… Read More

Description:
48 vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [Shanghai]: Yinyin lu 蟫隱廬, ca. 1920-31. Fine edition of this selection of lyrics, compiled on the order of the Kangxi emperor (1654-1722), by Shen Chenyuan, Wang Yiqing, and other court officials. The phrase shiyu, "what remains beyond poetry," refers to ci (tz'u) 詞 poetry, or lyrics, "one of the major poetic genres in China." Lyrics were "originally song text[s] set to existing musical tunes." The genre "emerged in the T'ang dynasty in response to the popularity of foreign musical tunes newly imported from Central Asia." Titles of such poems "point to particular tz'u-p'ai 詞牌 (tune patterns) for which the poems are composed" (The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature, Vol. 1, 846-49). Our book collects lyrics, arranging them by their tune patterns. The Kangxi emperor was one of the longest-reigning emperors in Chinese history, ruling over the vast Qing empire, whose borders expanded during his rule. Kangxi commissioned… Read More

Manuscript on paper with one map, 14 full-page, & about 20 smaller illus., finely drawn in brush & various colors. 53 folding leaves. 8vo (295 x 195 mm.), orig. blue wrappers (rubbed & a little worn), manuscript label on upper cover with "Sendai Kanoko" written, new stitching. [Japan]: from final page (in trans.) "copied 1839." The earliest survey of the wealthy Sendai fiefdom - known as the Sendai Kanoko - was prepared in 1695. At that time, the domain was led by Tsunamura Date (1659-1719). The survey was part of a nation-wide effort in the Genroku era to increase the amount of new farmland and improve irrigation works. When Tsunamura finally was able to exercise his own authority (following the famous succession feud Date Sodo), he ordered a series of public-works projects including building windbreaks and improving flood controls and irrigation. He also sponsored the construction of numerous Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Many of his efforts were incorporated into the Sendai Kanoko, which… Read More

Trans. into Chinese by Xuanzang. Orihon (accordion) format (258 x 12,550 mm.), 28 joined sheets, 23 columns per sheet, mostly 17 characters per column, blockprint height: 201 mm.). Printed on grayish recycled paper. [Nara: published by the monk Kōei at the Kōfukuji Temple, 1213]. An extremely rare example of a Kamakura-era sutra printed in Japan on recycled grayish paper; this is the first specimen we have encountered. For an excellent discussion on the subject of recycled paper used in early Japanese printing, we have turned to the most interesting contribution of SOAS Prof. Lucia Dolce ("A Sutra as a Notebook? Printing and Repurposing Scriptures in Medieval Japan," Ars Orientalis, Vol. 52, No. 3, 2023): The term sukigaeshigami 漉返紙 (reclaimed paper) appears often in literary works of the time, indicating paper made by soaking scrap paper and other fibers and then spreading them thinly. This method erased the previous text almost completely. Small traces of ink and even traces of… Read More

[Nara: 1222-27]. A rare early printed sutra scroll, part of the Karoku-ban edition printed in 1222-27. It has been printed on high-quality thick paper (gampi, or mulberry fibers), and printed in bold, thick strokes, using black sumi ink, typical of Kamakura and Muromachi kasuga-ban printings (kasuga-ban is a general term for publications of the Nara monasteries). The Mahaprajnaparamitasutra is a massive compilation of scriptural literature said to have been preached by the Buddha in four different places to 16 discrete assemblies. It includes seminal works such as the Prajnaparamita in One Hundred Thousand Lines and the Diamond Sutra. Woodcut illus. (five are double-page). .5, 13, .5 (ads); .5 (ads), 17, .5; .5 (ads), 14, .5 folding leaves. Three vols. 8vo, orig. green patterned semi-stiff wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. Kyoto: Honya Juemon, [1789]. First edition and very rare; this work was written as a result of the devastating Great Kyoto Fire, which broke out on 7 March 1788 and lasted several days. It caused serious damage, including the destruction of the Imperial Palace and the Nijo-jo Castle. The fire so shocked the bakufu that senior councillor Sadanobu Matsudaira was sent to Kyoto to investigate and consult with the Imperial Court. The first woodcut depicts how one can prepare for a quick escape in case of fire. This single-page illustration shows how to leave one's street clothes at nighttime so that they can be put on quickly for a fast evacuation. The first double-page illustration is a map of Kyoto where the great fire occurred. The following two double-page woodcuts show… Read More

Tokyo: Parco Co., 1991.

A scarce catalogue on Kawara's previously unstudied five-year stay in Tokyo, where he was part of influential avant-garde art student associations and wrote many pieces of art criticism. This book reproduces the complete Bathroom series (1953-54; Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art), Events in a Warehouse (1954; ibid.), and a number of figurative paintings and drawings executed in Japan. Inside, plastic sleeves each hold one or more newspaper clippings, glued onto one or both sides of a single sheet of lined notebook paper. Clippings are labeled, typically in red ballpoint pen, with the name and date of the newspaper from which they came; ink is also used to circle, underline, outline, or otherwise annotate particular sentences or paragraphs.
