Description:
Paris: Eugene Renduel, Editeur-Libraire, 1829-31, 1829. Second edition of volume one, published the same year as the first; first edition of volume two. Spines a little faded and slightly smudged; some light foxing; very good copy.. 2 vols, 8vo, 20th century tan quarter calf (signed Kering & Muller on the spine of volume one), marbled paper boards, spines with handsome gilt floral decorations and lettering, marbled edges. Frontis portrait. With half-titles. An early and scarce work by Paul Lacroix (1806-84), French antiquary, bibliographer, editor and author of novels and short tales, who often wrote under the pseudonym "Bibliophile Jacob," this being one of the earliest, if not the earliest example of his use of that nom de plume. Soirées de Walter Scott is a collection of French historical tales, inspired by a visit Scott made to Paris in 1826, during which Scott and Lacroix met, probably at a soirée at Princess Galitzin's, where James Fenimore Cooper was also in attendance. In the first… Read More

Description:
Paris: Jules Gay, Editeur, 1863, 1863. First edition, number 75 of 300 numbered copies on Holland paper (of a total of 317 copies). Upper joint starting, but sound; fine copy.. 12mo, contemporary green half morocco by V. Champs, marbled paper boards, spine gilt-decorated in five compartments, gilt lettering, t.e.g., others untrimmed. An interesting compilation by Paul Lacroix (1806-84), French antiquary, bibliographer, editor and author, of the library of Marie Antoinette that was housed at her estate, Petit Trianon. The 736 entries are arranged by sciences and arts, belles lettres (the majority of the works) and histoire. Along with the usual suspects are imaginary voyages and a number of memoirs of amorous characters that shocked the general reader when the catalogue was first published. Lacroix, who often wrote under the pseudonym "Bibliophile Jacob," compiled this when he was librarian of the Arsenal Library, Paris. Bookplate of F. T. Kunkelmann on the front paste-down.

New York: Hurd and Houghton, 1867, 1867. First edition. BAL 11241, state A with the title leaf a cancel; Wright II, 1507. Edges slightly rubbed; paper a shade browned; very good copy.. 8vo, original blind- and gilt-decorated dark green cloth, gilt lettering. The first book and only work of fiction by poet and musician Sidney Lanier (1842-1881), a novel set in Tennessee before and during the Civil War, which uses the conflict as a backdrop to examine and contrast the complicated nature of man. We first purchased this copy from Booked Up in Georgetown in 1985 and quickly sold it through a catalogue to a collector in Virginia. Recently we re-purchased this from a dealer representing that collector. In the intervening years we have not had a copy of Tiger-Lilies, though we have seen a few beat-up ones.

New York: Taylor & Dodd, 1840, 1840. First edition. Sabin 39863; American Imprints 40-3934. Some foxing; cloth a little faded and worn; very good copy.. 2 vols, 12mo, original blind-stamped purple cloth, gilt lettering. Writings from the combative radical Democrat and journalist William Leggett (1801-1839), who edited the Evening Post with William Cullen Bryant and championed and wrote extensively on abolition and free speech. This collection marked the first American attempt "to establish the standing of a writer on the basis of journalistic work" - DAB. Bryant, who held the copyright on this work, worked with Sedgwick on the editing. From the library of a friend of Bryant and probably Leggett, as well, New York author and journalist James Lawson (1799-1880), with his signature in penciil ("James Lawson / Yonkers") on each title-page. Lawson was a friend and collaborator with many New York writers of the period. See the DAB. This work often - but not always - contains a frontis portrait of Leggett.… Read More
