Description:
Paris: Garnier Freres, 1854. Early edition. First published in 1838-40). Large octavo (10 1/2 x 7 inches; 266 x 178 mm.). Publisher's quarter green morocco over green pebbled cloth over boards. Covers ruled in blind, spine with four raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, watered silk paper end-leaves, all edges gilt. Collating [4], xxiv, 598, [1, epitaph], [3, blank]. Inserted engraved frontispiece and 240 engraved illustrations of the fables as well as numerous engraved head and tail pieces. A Near Fine copy."In these designs, the most popular he ever drew, Grandville presents La Fontaine's beasts acting like men and sometimes costumed like them. Since La Fontaine's poems are a veiled commentary on human behavior, this formula works to admiration. Even Oudry's drawings do not always match Grandville's in psychological penetration, however superior they may be in other respects. Grandville is effective as well with uncostumed animals, even if he sometimes took them… Read more

London: Macmillan, 1864. First edition. Near Fine. Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and boards. Corners gently bumped; small split to cloth at top of rear joint. Blue coated endpapers. Hinges strengthened. Internally a tight, clean, copy without the typical spatter or signs of use associated with kitchen texts. Collates viii, 306, [6, adverts]: complete, including the two front plates. A scarce example of a cookery text designed for an emerging class of elegant middle class women, the present is listed at only 5 institutions on OCLC, none of these in the U.S. It is currently the only copy on the market."After reading several books on French Cookery, it struck me that none of them were appropriate to the class which most wanted them -- I mean the class rich enough to have good dinners, and still which cannot afford to keep a chef...My intention is to write for ladies who wish either to be able to point out to their cooks the defects they find in their ways of cooking or for… Read more

Description:
London: Printed by N. Biggs, for J. Cottle, Bristol, and Messrs. Robinsons, 1797. Second edition. Rare presentation copy of the 1797 second edition (much revised by Coleridge and greatly expanded with new poems by both authors). Small octavo, modern quarter red morocco, raised bands, marbled boards and end-papers, top edge gilt. Early presentation note from Charles Lamb bound in before the title page: "To my dear friend William Hone | Charles Lamb | Oct. 1811." Hone was a literary man and something of an early entrepreneur. One venture, that ultimately ended in failure, was his stint as an antiquarian bookseller. His friendship with Charles Lamb is well-documented.The first edition (and Coleridge's first book of poems), published the previous year, contained Lamb's first published verses. The second edition was published after Coleridge extensively revised his contribution and added a new Preface. Lamb added an additional 10 poems to the second edition (including "Childhood") in addition to the four… Read more

With the three engraved vignettes engraved by Blake {Volume I, pages 127, 206 and 225) as well as a full-page plate engraved by Blake after Rubens (V.I opposite page 159). A Very Good set overall with light to moderate foxing near the plates, most text leaves are generally in excellent shape. Lavater (1741-1801) "was the last and most influential of the descriptive physiognomists, a class of pseudo-scientists who attempted to ascertain character on the basis of physical features...Von der Physiognomik [1772], an unillustrated twovolume book, was Lavater's first work on the subject; this was… Read more

Description:
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1915. First edition. Near Fine. One of 1250 copies (429 of which were destroyed for "obscenity"). A copy that is very Nearly Fine with the spine a bit darkened and faint tape ghosts on the end papers. Housed in a custom slipcase.Originally conceived as the first part to Lawrence's more popular, Women in Love, the publisher released the two novels separately to avoid tainting Women in Love with the scandal of the obscenity charges brought against The Rainbow. In The Rainbow, Lawrence follows the Brangwen family through three generations, a narrative arc that corresponds with the Victorian Era. Lawrence's novel investigates the challenges that industrialization wrought on families, labor, beliefs, and relationships, especially intimate ones. It was the novel's candid exploration of sexual desire that disturbed authorities who, after a successful obscenity trial, seize and then destroyed copies of the book before issuing a ban for more than a decade. Near Fine.

Description:
Nairobi: The English Press Ltd, 1940. First edition. Original yellow cloth binding with title to front board. Spine a bit sunned; boards generally soiled and corners bumped. Small stain to front pastedown. Spotting to fore-edge but surprisingly clean internally. 248 pages interspersed with local advertisements; two pages of handwritten recipes from a previous owner to the final leaf of the Notes section. A wartime scarcity, the present work was released as a fundraising effort: "The entire profits from the sale of this book will be given to Mount Kenya Hospital." A reference on the same page suggests that the book was compiled by women of the East African Women's League, per a reference on page 2; and as the imprint on a variant edition (dated 1950 by OCLC) further suggests the involvement of the Catholic Women's Mission. The only copy on the market, this community cookery is reported at only one institution according to OCLC.The British Colony of Kenya became engaged in WWII at the same time as… Read more

[New York]: John J. O'Brien & Son Printers, 1894. First edition. Near Fine. Original pamphlet promoting the Constitutional Amendment Campaign events hosted by the New York City Woman Suffrage League. 4 pages including self-wraps. Slight chipping to second page, and scattered light foxing at fold and margins. Overall an exceptional copy of this rare pamphlet. OCLC reports no institutionally held copies, and the Programme does not appear in the modern auction record.1893-1894 proved to be critical years for the New York suffragists. During that time "New York State held a convention to revise its Constitution...women suffragists had lobbied for a place at this Convention in order to support an amendment that would grant women in New York the right to vote. At the request of suffragists, both Governor Hill and Governor Flower recommended that women be allowed to sit as delegates on the Constitutional Convention. London: Printed for J. Dodsley in Pall Mall; and T. Davies in Russell Street, Covent Garden, 1769. First edition. Near Fine. Early blue-gray wraps stitched at spine. Pages measuring 190 x 120mm. Collating complete: [4], 75, [1]. Gentle wear to wraps with light soiling at rear; title page gently toned but else a surprisingly bright copy. One of 1000 copies printed by William Bowyer and John Nichols. Scarce institutionally and in trade, it is the only copy currently on the market. The present copy aside, it has appeared only once at auction since 1964. A scarce and important dramatic work based on her third novel Henrietta, which exposed how a young woman's virtue alone could not protect her. Indeed, it depicts Henrietta's vulnerability and her reliance on the honesty and good intentions of those around her -- humans usually grappling with their own limitations, desires, vices and fears. Biting, humorous, sensational, and realistic, in novel form Henrietta blurred the lines of expectation and set the… Read more

Top edge brightly gilt. Marbled endpapers. An excellent copy internally, with none of the foxing typical of the era. 12mo (pages 160 x 100 mm) collating: xii, [2], 292; [4], 274, [2, adverts]; [4], 308; complete. A pleasing set of this rare work, of which there has been no complete copy at auction in over 35 years. At a time when Voltaire and his literati questioned the artistic value of Shakespeare's works, Charlotte Lennox and her three volume Shakespear Illustrated (1753-1754) carved out space for feminine voices within the debate. Taking Shakespeare to task for what she saw as his debauchery, over-use of source-books, and usurpation of authority from female characters by "taking from them the power and moral independence which older romances had given them" (Doody). A Fine copy.Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835-1836), a novel by Théophile Gautier, whose Préface is better known than the novel itself as a manifesto of l'art pour l'art. The novel was, however, much admired by Baudelaire and Balzac, and by fin-de- siècle writers and artists, both in France and elsewhere, as a pure expression of dilettantish and dandyish aestheticism and eroticism. Nursed to health by a fellow passenger, the working class Philip Held, Joseph develops strong feelings and a lifelong bond to his new friend; yet he opts to move ahead with his marriage to Julia. New York & Chicago: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1895. First edition. Fine. Original green publisher's cloth binding with silver and gilt to spine and front board. Extremely neat contemporary ownership signature of Hepsie A. Adams to front endpaper. Internally clean, complete, and tight. The slightest wear to extremities, mostly at the crown of spine. Released in the same year through the Woman's Temperance Publication Association, scholars note no priority between the two, which appear to have been bound from the same sheets with only the title page distinguishing them. Revell Company had a reputation for partnering with women's clubs and activist groups to ensure wider distribution of political works. This autobiographical work by leading American women's activist Frances Willard has appeared only twice at auction, with the most recent over 30 years ago in 1987."Frances Willard, leader of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU), was a complex and energetic figure in American feminism and… Read more

Columbus: Follett, Foster and Company, 1860. First edition. Original publisher's cloth binding with some rubbing to spine and extremities. First issue, with all points as called for by Monaghan (no line over the publisher's slug on title verso, and the number 2 at the foot of page 17). Collates [viii], 268 pages: lacking front endpaper else complete. Some light scattered foxing as is common in American imprints of this era, but in all a tight, pleasing copy of this book documenting an important moment in American politics.Documenting Lincoln and Douglas' rivalry for the 1858 U.S. Senate race, this title captures an important moment of flux for American politics. Just beginning his political career, the young Lincoln earned the Republican nomination right as the party was forming; and he already had proven himself "a leading figure because of his adroit and earnest dealing with the problem of slavery" (Oxford Companion). One of his great strenghts was his eloquence -- something Lincoln put on full… Read more
