The story of Giambattista Bodoni, a fine press printer and typographer, typed in his very own font. 9.5" x 6.5" Orange boards with paper title affixed to front cover. Matching dust jacket with black title to front cover. Numbered and limited to 250 copies. 80 pages printed on Italian handmade paper in imported Bodoni type, bound in paper board sides. Includes frontispiece and tissue-guard protecting the full-title page. Includes original order form. Condition: Corners and head/tail of spine rubbed. Paper title bright and intact. Pages clean and unmarked. Dust jacket is in two pieces; the spine is missing. 1-2" piece of front section is missing. Dust jacket now protected in mylar.

London: Martin Secker, 1926. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. In the original dust jacket, now darkened with age and showing minor wear to the corners and top edge, but otherwise intact, a rare survival from this date. Green cloth binding is clean and bright, with minor bumps to the corners. Bookplates of two previous owners: 'Frederick John Hancock Lloyd' on the paste down, 'James Madison Ross' on the flyleaf. Presumably one of them clipped the review that appeared in the Times Literary Review Supplement for November 25, 1926 and inserted it into the book. As that reviewer notes, 'Mr Machen has no taste for the thin, pale abstractions of to-day. The love of mystery and wonder, he repeats again, is the only sure foundation of art; and he turns to slightly more primitice conditions than those of the present hour to find fit subjects for his love'.

Eight loose broadsides, with seven illustrated recipes and an introduction/table of contents. The recipes celebrate the UCLA Library's collection of California cookbooks, selected to demonstrate "California's culinary landscape, as rich, varied, and magnificent as any one could hope to find." Sturdy brown cloth portfolio with paper label with slight wear to upper edge, 13 x 19". As a large portfolio, this order will be packed carefully and may incur an additional shipping charge.

Three-quarter binding with fading to spine, marbled paper, endpapers, top edge gilt. Toning to pages throughout.

Having previously published his work anonymously in an octavo edition 1798, Malthus considerably expanded his essay for the second edition, declaring in his preface "In its present shape, it may be considered as a new work, and I should probably have published it as such" (v). In addition to adding further evidence and restructuring his argument, Malthus notes that his views softened: "Throughout the whole of present work, I have so far differed in principle from the former, as to suppose another check to population possible, which does not strictly come under the head either of vice or misery; and, in the latter part, I have endeavoured to soften some of the harshest conclusions of the first essay.
