An often defended cultural appropriation of the Asian personage by white Hollywood actors, this 1957 production directed by Daniel Mann, starred Brando, Glenn Ford, Eddie Albert, John Forsythe, and the occasional Japanese actor. Four hand-colored frontispiece plates, and three additional hand-colored plates illustrate the "Little Tales," Volume 3 contains a frontispiece only. Each title page numbered with blind stamp "Polizei-Verwaltung zu Guben." Hand coloring is bright and fresh, onlay on Vol. 3 is not present, and the toe of the spine is chipped.  A very lovely set of tales, probably printed in Germany for the English juvenile; very good or better. Murdoch is complicated and seem to be working out her own demons through her throngs of characters, but it is a long and deep exploration of appearances and reality that will deposit you at its conclusion either thoroughly confused or prepared to teach metaphysics at Oxbridge.

Murdoch's twenty-third novel, and considered to be one of her best, concerns a group of Oxford University friends who, in middle-age, gather at a summer ball. An ancient love affair is rekindled, everyone is aghast. Several years earlier the group formed a "brotherhood" to finance one of the two lover's effort to write a theoretical book, presumably about Marxism, but the book has yet to be published. Each member of the brotherhood pays their annual dues but demands nothing from him; in fact, they are reluctant even to approach him about his progress.
