Synopsis: This picture-book is based on the Punch and Judy puppet plays, but this version tells of Punch's first, quite wicked life, and his involuntary transition to another dream (nightmare?) world where Judy, the baby, and a whole host of historical characters co-exist. Punch is offered a choice -- staying there to entertain the Court, or being allowed to "return to the other world and re-enact your barbarous life there as a creature of cloth and wood". He chose to return, and moments later, in the Spring of 1573 he was found at the side of the road by the great puppet-master Silvio Fiorello, who took him to the Court of Naples and started him on his -- second? -- successful life.

This is a sixth (May) impression of the March 1928 first edition, and should be thought of as a reading copy only. The interior of the book is clean and complete, but the paper has tanned, there is foxing on all three edges of the text block, and there is an ownership sticker from a private lending library on the front free end paper. The navy covers are clean, with moderate edge wear. The dust jacket seems in very good condition, again with moderate edge wear overall, but a darkened and more heavily worn spine. Synopsis: In a dystopian, post-disaster Britain, three children escape from their totalitarian village, and go north in search of a place where people can be free. The "Ransome" of the title is Arthur Ransome, who wrote the Swallows and Amazons series. One of the children found one of Ransome's books in an abandoned village, and it provided inspiration for the decsion to go north.
