Edges slightly rubbed; very good copy.. 6 vols, 8vo, red half morocco by Strikeman for Charles Scribners' Sons, red cloth sides, gilt decorated and lettered spines, t.e.g., others untrimmed. Vignettes and ornamental initials. The first comprehensive collection of the works of Thomas Nashe (bap.1567- c1601), the colorful playwright, poet, satirist, novelist and pamphleteer, who was at the center of the Elizabethan literary scene and many of its controversies and quarrels. This edition, arranged chronologically by date of publication, was privately printed for the Huth Library, founded by bibliophile Henry Huth (1815-78) and continued by his son Alfred Henry Huth (1850-1910). On the front free endpaper of volume one is the small ownership stamp of James Laughlin IV, founder of New Directions.

An unusual novel based on Neal's experiences in England, where he lived and worked as a writer between 1824 and 1827. Always a vocal partisan for American language and ways, the story relies heavily on dialogue and the contrasts between the two cultures. Contemporary ink signature of J. D. Harman on the title-page.

Title-page printed in red and black. The celebrated treatise on scientific and comparative geography by the German geographer Bernhardus Varenius (1622-1650), first published in Amsterdam in 1650. It became the standard textbook on the subject for a century. Isaac Newton edited and revised this edition for his students at Cambridge; it was Newton's first published work. Small bookplate of Johann Lawrence on the front paste-down.

Frontispiece. The second book by Japanese-American poet Yone Noguchi (1875-1947), a short collection of poems, mostly about Yosemite Valley and the surrounding Sierras. Noguchi moved to San Francisco from his native Japan in 1893, "a poor immigrant with little command of English" (Harlan). He was befriended by the San Francisco literati, Porter Garnett, Gelett Burgess, Charles Warren Stoddard and the publisher William Doxey, among them.

The only published volume of poetry by Andrews Norton (1786-1853), man of letters and conservative theologian from Cambridge, Mass., a slender volume of 16 poems. It was privately printed posthumously by Norton's family, and this copy bears a family inscription. Presentation on the front free endpaper: "Sarah P. Pratt / August 1854 / The Gift of Mrs. [Thomas] Wigglesworth." Mrs. Wigglesworth was Norton's sister Jane.
