Following the Dumbarton Oaks conference, which laid out the plan for creating the United Nations, discussion sessions were organized by the League of Women voters to go over the proposals and inform the public. This bulletin-board poster, with its cartoon of four nations represented by figures each in a flag-bedecked phone booth, includes blank spaces where the specifics date, time , and place of such meetings could be filled in by local organizers. The follow-up conference in San Francisco in 1945 resulted in the first U.N. Charter.

Heusinger had been Chief of General Staff in the German army under Hitler, and later Inspector General of the Bundeswehr in postwar Germany. He was in the room with Hitler when the bomb exploded in the 1944 assassination attempt by Claus von Stauffenberg. His appointment as head of the NATO Military Committee in Washington was controversial, but he served in the post until retiring in 1964. Extensive text in this poster appears in English on one side and in Yiddish on the other.

One of 300 roman-numeraled "exemplaires de press" out of 1400 printed on Alfa Navarre. There were another 72 copies divided among smaller limitations on different fine papers. This copy bears an undated signed inscription on the half-title: "A Monsieur Gabriel Marcel en bien sincère hommage, Irène Nemirovsky." Born in Ukraine into a Jewish family, the author fled at age fifteen with her parents during the Russian Revolution of 1917, eventually settling in Paris. She enjoyed modest success as a French writer, especially with her first novel David Golder (1929), but along with her family she was denied French citizenship. Because of her Jewish heritage -- and despite her conversion to Catholicism -- she fell into disfavor under the Vichy regime.
