Little Rock: Tunnah and Pittard, 1898. First. Hard Bound. Near Fine./None. Rare (and expensive) little book written by a man who knew individuals intimately in Helena, Arkansas. The author was a pre-War business partner with Cleburne and married into Hindman's family. One of the earliest bios of the great Cleburne who was a division commander, Army of Tennessee, until he gave his life on the ramparts of the Franklin defenses in 1864. Cleburne was arguably the best division commander on either side. Very little can be found on General Hindman, also a general in the Army of Tennessee. He began as the colonel of the 2nd Arkansas but rapidly gained major general status. He suffered a major facial wound at Kennesaw, fled to Mexico following the War, returned and was assassinated in Arkansas. Nevins II-78: "...of value because of the scarcity of data on either..." A must have for any serious Civil War or Neale book collector. The 22 year old Neese mustered into service in 1862 as a corporal. He became a member of Chew's Battery, Stuart's Horse Artillery, ANV. With the outbreak of the Civil War, young Chew raised a battery of horse artillery, "Chew's Battery," which eventually became part of the famous Laurel Brigade under Stonewall Jackson's command. He participated in all Jackson's campaigns until Jackson's death in May 1863. Despite his age (just 20 in 1863!) Chew was promoted to the chief of the cavalry's guns under J.E.B. Stuart. He then served through the Gettysburg Campaign, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. This is a detailed and lengthy account of a fighting Massachusetts infantry regiment. It suffered so many casualties that it was designated a"Fighting 300 Regiment" by Fox. The regiment served in the Army of the Potomac mostly in the Sixth Corps. It suffered heavily at Second Fredericksbrg (Chancellorsville), The Wilderness, and Spottsylvania. TRULY A RARE BOOK, LIMITED TO 300 COPIES. THIS ONE SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Nina Kirby-Smith Buck, likely a daughter of the General. She had married into the Buck family, the one famous for the biography of General Clebourne. The dedication is to Gordon Buck of that family. Smith was a West Point graduate who fought in the Mexican War and served in the famed pre- Civil War Second Dragoons. He quickly made general officer rank in the Confederacy when he took part in the ill fated 1862 Kentucky affair. He was posted as commander in what became "Smithdom," that being the huge area East of the Rockies and West of the Mississippi River.
