STEADMAN, Ralph. 1st English Language trade edition, 16 x 24cm brown boards with gilt stamped tables to the spine, map endpapers 1287pp with black and white illustrations by Ralph Steadman and original unclipped jacket priced at £2.75 net. The boards have been well protected by the jacket and are clean and bright with just a hint of rubbing to the bottom edge. Internally clean unmarked pages noting just a book plate for historian Hugh Brogan on the verso of the front free endpaper. The jacket has a little fading to the spine which extend onto the rear panel for a couple of centimetres and for a little on the top edge. There is a little light creasing along the top edge and a ding on the front panel near t`he spine. All in all a very collectable copy. Uncut edges, ix, 294pp with 8 full page colour plates. Original pictorial dust jacket echoing covers. The book has been very well protected by its dust jacket and the boards are clean and bright with just a hint of shelfwear. The binding is firm and square. Internally, there is a neat Christmas gift inscription to the front free endpaper and only the very occasional very faint mark. The dust jacket is in excellent condition considering its age with a little chipping to the head of the spine extending to 0.5 cm on the joints and loss of 1.3 x 0.3cm on the image on the spine. A very good plus copy with just a hint of dulling to the gilt on the spine and a little shelfwear along the bottom edge. Internally, there is no name inscription or bookplate and the merest hint of spotting to the edge of the text block. The dust jacket has some toning to the spine and a loss of 0.5 cm at the head and minimal loss to the corners and bottom rear joint. There is a closed 1cm tear to the front panel along the top edge. The jacket presents very well in its removable, clear protective cover (not shown). All in all a very good 1st edition copy of this the most famous play by one of the 'Angry Young Men' of 1950s theatre. VG++/G. 1st Edition, 1st Impression. 205 x 267 mm blue cloth backed decorative boards with 90 x 112 mm pictorial title label to the front and gilt stamped titles to the spine, pictorial endpapers 99pp, (1) blank,(4) author's works with 8 colour plates, 8 black and white plates and further black and white illustrations within the text. With extremely scarce unclipped jacket priced at 10s 6d. The boards are brighter than usual with faint marking along the top and bottom edges of the front board corresponding to the tears in the dust jacket, presumably due a a reaction with the tape. The rear board has a 3 mm dark spot on the rear board and a faint mark from the tape that had been used to repair the rear panel of the jacket. Internally the book is very clean, without names, inscriptions or book plates and all the illustrations are clean, bright and unmarked, save one plate which has a repaired tear at the bottom margin. Unpaginated with text in black and red and illustrated with woodcuts by Fritz Kredel. There is some toning to the spine and a little rubbing to the edges and boards most evidently at the corners. Internally, without name, inscription or bookplate and just the occasional spotting, mainly to the prelims and uncut edges. All in all a very good plus copy with some lovely woodcut illustrations.
