Description:
Munich & Berlin: R. Oldenbourg, 1923. Oberth, Hermann (1894-1989). Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen. 8vo. 92pp. 3 folding lithographed plates. Munich & Berlin: R. Oldenbourg, 1923. 254 x 175 mm. Original wrappers, uncut, wrappers a little worn & chipped; boxed. Occasional minor foxing, but very good. First Edition of Oberth's thesis on the rocket in interplanetary space, in which he set out to prove four propositions: (1) that the technology of the time permitted the building of machines capable of rising above the earth's atmosphere; (2) that these machines could attain velocities sufficient to prevent their falling back to earth, or even to escape the earth's gravitational pull; (3) that such machines could be built to carry human beings; and (4) that under certain conditions, their manufacture might be profitable. Oberth demonstrated that a rocket can operate in a vacuum and that it can surpass the velocity of its own exhaust; he also pointed out the superiority of liquid fuels in producing…

Description:
House of Commons. Report of the committee appointed to superintend the experiments of Dr. Sickler, for the purpose of proving the efficacy of a method, proposed by him for unrolling and deciphering the Herculaneum manuscripts. 7pp. [London:] N.p., 19 March 1818. 320 x 199 mm. Unbound; stitched. Very good to fine First Edition. In 1816 the King of the Two Sicilies presented twelve heavily charred papyrus rolls found at Herculaneum to the Prince Regent, George IV. Sickler, a German archeologist, had devised a new method for unrolling the fragile rolls, and the British government brought him to England and paid him to carry out the project. Unfortunately, it appears that Sickler's method consisted of soaking the rolls in water until they were malleable and unrolling them from there. This method washed away any remnants of ink on the papyrus or caused the layers of the papyrus to crumble, rendering them useless for scholars. Sickler inadvertently destroyed seven of the twelve rolls, and a Parliamentary…

1953. Oparin, Alexander Ivanovich (1894-1980). Collection of 11 books by Oparin, together with the festschrift issued in honor of Oparin's 80th birthday, as listed below. From the library of Melvin Calvin (1911-97), 1961 Nobel Laureate in chemistry. Includes six books inscribed by Oparin to Calvin, and seven books with Calvin's ownership signature. V.p., 1953-75. Very good; see list for condition details. First Editions or First Editions in English unless otherwise specified. Oparin was the first to propose the heterotrophic or "primordial soup" theory of the origin of life on Earth. In Proiskhozhedenie zhizni (1924), his first book on the subject, Oparin hypothesized that life arose from the organic compounds formed on the planet's surface during its early history. "Oparin's central thesis was that the first organisms to emerge in the anaerobic environment of the primitive Earth must have been heterotrophic bacteria. He proposed that life had been preceded by a lengthy period of abiotic syntheses…

Paris: Baillière, 1841. Orfila, Mathieu J. B. (1787-1853). Rapport sur les moyens de constater la présence de l'arsenic dans les empoisonnemens par ce toxique. 53pp. Text illustrations. 204 x 130 mm. Paris: J.-B. Baillière, 1841. Original printed wrappers, upper corner of front wrapper chipped. Light toning but very good. First Edition. Orfila founded the science of toxicology with the publication of his monumental Traité des poisons (1814-15; Garrison-Morton.com 2072). He created new techniques for detecting arsenic poisoning as well as refining existing ones, and he played a major role in the 1840 conviction of Marie Lafarge, found guilty of poisoning her husband with arsenic after Orfila provided damning toxicological evidence against her. In the present pamphlet, published a year after the Lafarge trial, Orfila included extracts from reports by the Académie Royale de la Médecine and the Académie des Sciences supporting his findings on arsenic detection, as well as his own refutation of…
