Folded 8 x 10 inch letter from Philip Evan Thomas, dated 1850, pinned to the front free endpaper. First volume: 189, [3] pp including errata page. Second volume: 119 pp. This is a detailed account of the Quaker effort from 1828 to 1850 to provide assistance to the Seneca indians. This copy was also a presentation copy from a Joint Committee member, Philip Thomas, who was also the first president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and a major figure in the early canal enterprises of New England. In a cover letter, pinned to the front free endpaper, Thomas writes to a friend: ". . . I now forward to thee 10 copies of our Report for 1847 to 1850. Recto contains a printed extract of the minutes from the 1820 Yearly Meeting of Women Friends of New York. The name "Abigail Evernghim, Clerk. " is lso printed at the bottom. The verso reads: "MINUTES of the Yearly Meeting. 1820." along with the name and address of the printer. In early 19th century America, the Society of Friends or Quakers dealt with organizational and other church issues in Quarterly and Yearly meetings. Each Society would hold separate meetings for men and women, and most actions required the agreement of both in order to become effective. In 1820, the women Quakers of New York wrestled with the "subject of company keeping and joining in marriage with those not of our Society.
