1686 GREEK & ROMAN Military Dutch Netherlands Wars Elephants Woodcuts PaffenrodeJan van Paffenrode was a 17th-century Dutch soldier who was much better known for his poems and writings on military tactics than his military service. After the successes of his poems and his translation portions of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses', Paffenrode wrote a treatise on Greek and Roman military at the onset of the Franco-Dutch War in in the 1670s. This work, "Greek and Roman Military Trade" compared ancient classical battle tactics to modern Dutch techniques.
This 1686 edition includes numerous engravings depicting gear and weaponry used in ancient battles – footwear, helmets, scepters. However, the illustration of the War Elephant is easily the most interesting of all of the engravings found in this work!
