[Batavia] : Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, 1938. Six individual menus, in identical folding card format (240 x 160 mm), with sepia tone photographically illustrated fronts, depicting Tjandi Sewu and Prambanan temples (Yogyakarta), Aceh monument in Batavia, Papandajan volcano near Garoet, a Batak house, and heathen tombs at Sawangan (Celebes); the menus themselves are on the centre pages, four being printed or typed on board T.S.S. Nieuw Holland, and the other two (with more extensive information for tourists in Dutch and English) printed at the Bali Hotel; the menus have printed dates, all in June-July 1938; reverse of one example with traveller's notes on Singapore in pencil, a couple of the fronts with a tiny amount of silverfishing, else a clean and very attractive group, collected by a cruise ship passenger. Albumen print photograph, 115 x 185 mm, laid down on a section of its original album page of thin card, contemporary caption in pencil across lower margin, the albumen print in excellent condition, the card with some very mild toning. This view, looking across the harbour from the heights of Neutral Bay to Fort Denison, with Elizabeth Bay and Darling Point in the distance, is taken from almost the same vantage point as John Paine's photograph of 1881 (see National Library of Australia, nla.pic-an10691479-2), and may well also have been taken by Paine. A small number of buildings in the 1881 view are not present in the photograph we offer here, suggesting that this albumen print dates to around 1880. Note the seated figure in the foreground, placed in the composition to give a sense of scale. Circa 1880. Albumen print photograph, 180 x 110 mm, image 90 x 125 mm, laid down on its original album leaf of thick card, no photographer's imprint, contemporary manuscript caption in French to lower margin of the mount: 'Palais de l'Exposition'; a strong print in good condition.  The Garden Palace, built to house the Sydney International Exhbition of 1879, was destroyed by fire in 1882. This view shows the Macquarie Street entrance, and was probably taken in late 1879 or early 1880. The photograph came with a group of albumen prints collected by a French traveller who visited Melbourne and Sydney around 1880.

Theatre playbill, single sheet (330 x 200 mm), advertising a production at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden on Tuesday May 8 1827 of the 'Melo-Dramatic Romantic Spectacle, in 2 acts, founded on the fanciful Adventures of Peter Wilkins, or, The Flying Indians', giving a full list of the cast and a brief description of each scene, commencing with 'The Loadstone Rock in the Pacific Ocean, on which the ship De la Cruiz is wrecked', and culminating in 'The Extraordinary Ascension of Peter Wilkins, borne on the back of the Lasks, or Flying Slaves, attended by the whole tribe of Glums and Gawries'. Peter Wilkins was an extremely popular fictional character who had supposedly learned the secret of flight from his time as a traveller in the South Seas. Productions of this aeronautical fantasy thrilled both English and American audiences during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Theatre playbill, single sheet (510 x 240 mm, incomplete, lacking a section at the head with venue and date, the upper two-thirds tipped onto modern card), advertising a production staged at the Drury Lane Theatre, London, in late December 1860, of 'Peter Wilkins or, Harlequin and the Flying Women of the Loadstone Island', giving a full list of the cast, details of the production and a brief description of each scene, culminating in 'The Wonderful Flight of the Flying Islanders to their Aerial Home'. The play was part of the Drury Lane Theatre's Christmas pantomime season and each night's performance featured guest appearances by the celebrated actors, Mr Charles Kean and his wife Mrs Kean (Ellen Tree). Black-and-white press photograph on glossy paper, 205 x 295 mm, with editor's markings by a staff member of the San Francisco Examiner (?); verso with pasted-on cutting from the newspaper issue in which it was printed (with Associated Press Wirephoto credit), stamped Oct 23 1943, below it the wet stamp 'Received Examiner Reference Library Oct 23 1943', and above it the newspaper's later reference library index stamp 'War-2nd World-New Guninea [sic]-Austrailians [sic] in'; in excellent condition (some mild edge creasing). Australian war photographer and cinematographer Damien Parer's most famous image is this still from his July 1943 newsreel, Assault on Salamaua. Small octavo (150 x 105 mm), maroon faux crocodile-skin textured stiff card wrappers, gilt lettering to the front; 20 pp, chromolithographic pastedowns with Art Nouveau designs by the celebrated lithographers A. Waton of St. Etienne, title page and text in red and black, double-page halftone plate at centre; a superb example of a very attractive fin de siècle trade catalogue for absinthe and other exotic spirits and liqueurs, including Curaçao, Kirsch, Cognac and rum. Quarto, pictorial papered boards (overall very good, the upper board with a vertical wrinkle at left side with a couple of tiny sections of paper loss, some mild ink spotting across lower edge, top corner with small amount of paper loss, other corners bumped; lower board with a mild scratch at upper right), off-setting to front and rear endpapers, [50] pp, superbly illustrated with [12] full page colour plates and sepia drawings throughout (the final colour plate is badly loosened, but still attached at the foot), internally bright and clean, with occasional and very mild handling marks; a good copy of a spectacularly designed and emotionally appealing children's book, the adventures of a family of (very convincingly) anthropomorphised kangaroos, told in verse form. Muir 5707; Robert Holden noted in The Mint Exhibition (1985) that this was 'perhaps the best known story entirely devoted to the kangaroo'.
