Description:
London: Printed for W. Nicoll, 1766. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/No Jacket. The Morality of the East First edition 1766. Using a wide ranging series of extracts from contemporary works - in particular Sale's translation of the Koran - the unknown compiler (possibly John Northouck (?) attributes the rise of Islam to a failure of Christianity in the Middle East, taking a Potestant and anti-Papist point of view. The extracts also focus on borderline taboo subjects of the period (divorce, women and marriage) in order to elicit sales. A rare work, bound with (and after) a First edition of Charles Howard, Duke of NorfolkThoughts, Essays, and Maxims, also a scarce and difficult work to find. Both works collate complete (vii) 4-143pp [1] and 133pp [1] (advert) respectively. Bound in period full calf, rebacked retaining the original spine with raised bands, gilt with morocco title label. Provenance - Armorial Bookplate of Sir Edward Blackett.
