Wildly popular, they were derived from a pair of Jesuit books which a friend had brought back from the continent. "It is Quarles's historical achievement to have established in protestant England the dominant type of the Catholic baroque emblems representing the encounters of Amor Divinus or Divine Love and the Soul. These books were acceptable to moderate Catholics and protestants because they promoted the general tenets of the Christian life, not controversial doctrine"

Contemporary sheep, neatly rebacked with corners restored as well, gilt spine title, some rubbing, small crack to the top of the upper joint. A collection of aphorisms. "Quarles brings together timeless wisdom tersely expressed, and political advice for a king threatened by civil war" (ODNB). Originally published in 1640.

London: Printed for R. Royston, 1667.. Seventh edition, 12mo, (xvi), 240, (2) pp. Portrait frontispiece, some light browning, later signatures and some addition to the endpapers. Contemporary calf, one corner worn, the others bumped, neatly rebacked. Originally published in 1644. "...probably the most successful English poet of his age" (ODNB), this was his last work.
