1987. Hong Kong, Joint Publishing Company (JPC), 1987. Octavo. XII, 254 pages. Softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Shu Qingchun (3 February 1899 – 24 August 1966), known by his pen name Lao She, was a Chinese novelist and dramatist. He was a writer of 20th-century Chinese literature, known for his novel Rickshaw Boy and the play Teahouse. He was of Manchu ethnicity, and his works are known for their vivid use of the Beijing dialect. Lao She was a writer whose life span covered all stages of modern China: the Qing dynasty, the Republic and the Communists. Lao She was greatly influenced by the writer Charles Dickens. Born during the end of the Qing dynasty, Lao She was from the Manchu Sumuru clan and experienced the Boxer Rebellion first hand as well as the atrocities committed by the Eight-Nation Alliance, a scarring experience for him. During the Cultural Revolution, Shu was tortured by the Red Guards, causing him to become insane. Shu either died by drowning himself or was… Read More

Willard Van Orman Quine (June 25, 1908 – December 25, 2000) (known to intimates as "Van") was an American philosopher and logician in the analytic tradition, recognized as "one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century." From 1930 until his death 70 years later, Quine was continually affiliated with Harvard University in one way or another, first as a student, then as a professor of philosophy and a teacher of logic and set theory, and finally as a professor emeritus who published or revised several books in retirement. He filled the Edgar Pierce Chair of Philosophy at Harvard from 1956 to 1978. Includes illustrated map of the desert in Israel and many black and white photographs throughout. Original Hardcover with original illustrated dustjacket (photograph) in protective Mylar. Excellent condition with only minor signs of wear. Inscribed by Yael Dayan to Willard Van Orman Quine. Yael Dayan - novelist, traveler, soldier, and daughter of a general. This book is her story of a battle for the desert in Israel, written in combat from her own experience, and the mark it left. With poetic spareness, Dayan tells the story of days and nights of dust, heat and hardship; of fallen friends mourned, and fallen enemies grieved over. As stark and unpitying in its truth as the desert, this is a soldier's story, and a woman's story, full of remarkable insights and sober contemplations. The author's other novels include: "New Face in the Mirror", "Envy the Frightened" and "Dust".

2005. Dublin, Pan Pan & The Lilliput Press, 2005. 8°. 200 pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective collector's mylar. Excellent, close to new condition. No.174 of only 400 copies printed. Over the period of a year Gavin Quinn visited the private homes of 100 actors and asked them to try and answer the question: Why do you think you became an actor? Each response was filmed and recorded. He then subsequently photographed each of them. The result is this book. This book tells the story of these one hundred actors: one hundred illuminating answers to a simple question. In "One" the actor talks to the reader from the stillness of their portrait within their own environments. The book is one element of a large-scale performance project created and conceived by Pan Pan, involving 100 actors, 100 rooms and 100 audience members in a specially designed structure designed by the sculptor Andrew Clancy. Subtitled "Healing with Theatre", this one on one meeting is enabled by an outflow… Read More
