Patchett owns Parnassus, and it's Renkl's hometown bookstore in Nashville. Association copy, inscribed on the half-title page in black ink: "To the Governor [Joan Finney] and the people of Kansas from a native--at Cedar Crest, May 22, 1992, Richard Rhodes." Joan Finney was the first woman to serve as Governor of Kansas, from 1991-1995. A nice association, since this book is a reissue by the University of Kansas Press of Richard Rhodes's 1970 first book. He would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award (the triple crown) for his 1986 900-page work of literary journalism, The Making of the Atomic Bomb. He is also widely known for his great biography of John James Audubon. Rhodes was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1938. Fine book in fine jacket.

The late Richardson was a winner of the Bancroft Prize, and this book prompted a fan letter from Annie Dillard (who did her undergraduate thesis on Thoreau) that blossomed into a romance, though they were both married at the time, and subsequently a long marriage. An absolute tome of a book, "a sweeping work of environmental history [about] humanity's profound impact on the natural world in the early modern period [1500-1800 CE]." Richards was Professor of History at Duke University, and a recipient in 2007 of the Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies Award. He died in 2007. Fine book, in a near fine jacket because of some light wear to the upper edges of the jacket, in particular some curling/crinkling to the top of the rear flap. Presents well, and scarce signed. An association copy, Richardson's first book inscribed on the half-title page to his mentor and colleague at the University of Denver, Gerald Chapman: "For Jerry, with affection, admiration, and many thanks, Bob." Uncommon signed. Richardson studied with Chapman as a PhD student, and then taught with him in Denver from 1972 to 1987, during which time he wrote the first of his well-recognized  biographies, on Thoreau. He followed with biographies on Emerson, and William James, the later of which won the Bancroft Prize. He also married Annie Dillard, a relationship  set in motion when Dillard sent him a fan note about his Thoreau book. Laid in also is Ripley's card.  Moynihan was a four-term US Senator from NY from 1977 to 2001 who, among other many other activities and accomplishments, served for a stint as the chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. Earlier, as a counselor to President Richard Nixon, he also wrote an incredibly on-the-mark memo to Congress in 1969 about the dangers of carbon dioxide to climate change--a very early public alarm that it seems is seldom recognized in the sweep of climate change advocacy.  Sidney Dillon Ripley was an ornithologist, a wildlife conservationist, and for twenty years the Secretary of the Smithsonian, leading the charge to reinvigorate and expand the institution. Inscribed to Martha Stewart, the host of all hosts: "To my friend, Martha, with fond memories and best wishes. Hillary Rodham Clinton, 01/11/01." Martha Stewart famously interviewed Clinton in the red room to talk about what it was like to live and entertain in the White House. She also boldly came out in favor of Clinton for president in 2016. An interesting association and great conversation piece combining two influential women who have also weathered high-profile falls from grace. This book was donated by Stewart to the Mark Twain Library Book Sale in Redding, Connecticut. The book is fine in a very near fine jacket with only a little bumping at corners. With blurbs from James Hansen and Tim Flannery among others. Romm, who has a PhD in physics from MIT, is the founder and executive director of the Center for Energy and Climate Solutions. A reviewer for Grist.org wrote that this book "may be the most depressing book on climate change Ive read," which probably means it's essential reading. A note in another hand on the FFEP lists a a climate change activism website address, perhaps a note to self about how to take action. Otherwise a fine book in a very near fine jacket. Uncommon signed.

An uncommon book in the first edition, and especially notable because this copy belonged to The American Museum of Natural History which Roosevelt had a close association with. The Museum's bookplate is on the front pastedown with the deaccession stamp "A.M.N.H. Cancelled" on it. Additionally, tipped in on the title page is a "With the compliments of the author" slip--Roosevelt had the book sent to the museum. Roosevelt's father co-founded the museum and the future President spent time there as a boy, even donating his own early natural history and taxidermy collection to the museum. Number 269 of 500 copies, this book consists of eleven folded leaves of text laid into publisher's cloth blue cloth folder, in its right pocket. The leaves are printed by Noel Young on handmade Japanese paper. In the left pocket, three postcards in sepia/brown tones are laid in as published, two with a photos of people and the third larger with a map.
