Description:
Milkweed Editions, 2000. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Near Fine. Nicely inscribed on the title page: "For Sylvia--Daughter of the pine flatwoods, woman who loves this world. Thanks for all you do on behalf of wildness, and in service to humanity. What a pleasure to find a Southern girl in this northern place. Here's to home! Janisse Ray, 5/6/2005, Brattleboro, Vermont." A classic of contemporary environmental writing, much taught and talked about. Near fine on account of a bit of peeling laminate to tip or lower front corner. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

Univ Pr of Kansas, 1991. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Greer, Bill. Association copy, inscribed on the half-title page in black ink: "To the Governor [Joan Finney] and the people of Kansas from a native--at Cedar Crest, May 22, 1992, Richard Rhodes." Joan Finney was the first woman to serve as Governor of Kansas, from 1991-1995. A nice association, since this book is a reissue by the University of Kansas Press of Richard Rhodes's 1970 first book. He would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award (the triple crown) for his 1986 900-page work of literary journalism, The Making of the Atomic Bomb. He is also widely known for his great biography of John James Audubon. Rhodes was born in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1938. Fine book in fine jacket.

University of California Press, 1986. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Moser, Barry. Signed and dated in the year of publication on the first blank: "Robert D. Richardson, Oct 26 1986." Uncommon signed. The late Richardson was a winner of the Bancroft Prize, and this book prompted a fan letter from Annie Dillard (who did her undergraduate thesis on Thoreau) that blossomed into a romance, though they were both married at the time, and subsequently a long marriage. Good stuff. Near fine book with some faint foxing to top face of the text block; in a near fine jacket with an inconspicuous tape repair to a half-inch tear at rear upper corner at the flap fold. We invite you to explore our growing collection of signed and inscribed books related to Thoreau. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

University of California Press, 2003. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Family association copy, inscribed on the front end free paper: "To Aunt Olive, a fellow author, John Richards." An absolute tome of a book, "a sweeping work of environmental history [about] humanity's profound impact on the natural world in the early modern period [1500-1800 CE]." Richards was Professor of History at Duke University, and a recipient in 2007 of the Distinguished Contributions to Asian Studies Award. He died in 2007. Fine book, in a near fine jacket because of some light wear to the upper edges of the jacket, in particular some curling/crinkling to the top of the rear flap. Presents well, and scarce signed. Bloomington: Indiana UP, 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. An association copy, Richardson's first book inscribed on the half-title page to his mentor and colleague at the University of Denver, Gerald Chapman: "For Jerry, with affection, admiration, and many thanks, Bob." Uncommon signed. Richardson studied with Chapman as a PhD student, and then taught with him in Denver from 1972 to 1987, during which time he wrote the first of his well-recognized biographies, on Thoreau. He followed with biographies on Emerson, and William James, the later of which won the Bancroft Prize. He also married Annie Dillard, a relationship set in motion when Dillard sent him a fan note about his Thoreau book. Chapman was a distinguished scholar who wrote books on Shakespeare and Edmund Burke among others and co-founded the Denver Quarterly. Parts of Literature and Film first appeared in that magazine as mentioned in the acknowledgement page, where Chapman is also thanked for his criticism.…

Description:
NY: Simon & Schuster, 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. An association copy, inscribed on the half title page: "To Pat Moynihan, with warm regards, Dillon Ripley." Laid in also is Ripley's card. Moynihan was a four-term US Senator from NY from 1977 to 2001 who, among other many other activities and accomplishments, served for a stint as the chairman of the Senate Environment Committee. Earlier, as a counselor to President Richard Nixon, he also wrote an incredibly on-the-mark memo to Congress in 1969 about the dangers of carbon dioxide to climate change--a very early public alarm that it seems is seldom recognized in the sweep of climate change advocacy. Sidney Dillon Ripley was an ornithologist, a wildlife conservationist, and for twenty years the Secretary of the Smithsonian, leading the charge to reinvigorate and expand the institution. He was an expert on rails (the waterfowl) and birds in Asia. He was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom. This title was his primary…

Description:
Simon & Schuster, 2000. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. A quarto, coffee-table style book detailing Clinton s hosting (replete with recipes) in the White House. Inscribed to Martha Stewart, the host of all hosts: "To my friend, Martha, with fond memories and best wishes. Hillary Rodham Clinton, 01/11/01." Martha Stewart famously interviewed Clinton in the red room to talk about what it was like to live and entertain in the White House. She also boldly came out in favor of Clinton for president in 2016. An interesting association and great conversation piece combining two influential women who have also weathered high-profile falls from grace. This book was donated by Stewart to the Mark Twain Library Book Sale in Redding, Connecticut. The book is fine in a very near fine jacket with only a little bumping at corners. Description:
NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons/ The Knickerbocker Press, 1893. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. An uncommon book in the first edition, and especially notable because this copy belonged to The American Museum of Natural History which Roosevelt had a close association with. The Museum's bookplate is on the front pastedown with the deaccession stamp "A.M.N.H. Cancelled" on it. Additionally, tipped in on the title page is a "With the compliments of the author" slip--Roosevelt had the book sent to the museum. Roosevelt's father co-founded the museum and the future President spent time there as a boy, even donating his own early natural history and taxidermy collection to the museum. His support of the museum continued throughout his life. And of course there was the recent controversy over the removal of the Roosevelt equestrian statue on the steps of the museum. The Wilderness Hunter is in essence a series of profiles of different American mammals--wolves, cougars, elk, moose, you name it--and their…

Meredith Press, NY, 1969. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Inscribed on the title page: "They are here uninvited and often unloved--but great teaching material! Helen Ross Russell." On the font free endpaper, the original owner's name stamped in ink "("Thomas J. Rillo") is struck through and Russell has re-dedicated the book beneath it: "To Cliff Knapp." An early book about urban nature, and apparently scarce in hardcover, with no other copies currently available (there are some paperbacks from a 1974 edition). Illustrated by Marcia Erickson. Russell is an important mid-century environmentalist, an early female biologist-conservationist and promoter of environmental education. She was a professor of biology and chair of the science department of what's now Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts. Many of her outdoorsy books were for young adults. Thomas R.
