An ambitious treatise, done with German thoroughness and through the eyes of a Midwestern German. The author provides a comprehensive picture of nineteenth century Chicago, and it is fascinating to see the significance of the "things German ." A very scarce title, either in English or here, in the original German.

Pechel war von 1924 bis 1961 (außer 1942-1945) herausgeber der konservativen "Deutschen Rundschau". Dieses aus moderner Sicht sehr kontroverse Buch ist ein Indiz für die restaurative Moral der Nachkriegszeit bis zum großen gesellschaftlichen Umbruch der späten 60er Jahre.
