[a1-6], A4 - V4{Q2 and Q3 have been bound in the wrong order}. 4to., bound in 19th century quarter leather with dark marbled boards and Gordon Craig’s monogrammed ownership label on the upper cover, and on the front pastedown, spine lettered in gilt with gilt rules. Spine rather rubbed, title page with a small paper restoration in blank margin and to woodcut, otherwise a good copy.||First complete edition of the first book exclusively devoted to stage design, stage architecture, machinery and special effects. No. 371 of 450 printed on papier vergé d’Arches, but this a rare hand-coloured copy. 33 engravings by Sylvain Sauvage, engraved in collaboration with Emile-Henri Feltesse, including an engraving on each wrapper, all expertly hand-coloured in gouache. Tall thin 8vo., loose in the original wrappers, each volume with its own maroon cloth backed chemise and both in the matching maroon cloth edged slipcase. Slipcase and chemises with a little wear or rubbing at edges, a little darkening to the wrappers but otherwise very good.||Sylvain Sauvage (1888-1948), whose real name was Felix Roy, was an illustrator and engraver who published his own artist’s books with the imprint of his home in Paris as well as creating illustrations for other publishers. This copy hors commerce, reserved and inscribed on the limitations page by Sylvain Sauvage for Pierre Bellanger and corresponding with the 10 copies on Japon with an original signed pencil and watercolour drawing an unused plate inspired by the drawing, a suite of progressive proofs, and a suite of the plates in sanguine and one in black, (the latter isn’t mentioned in the limitation) 25 delicately coloured copper engravings by Sauvage including 5 in the text. Sm. 4to., in the original wrappers with colour copper plate by Sauvage on upper cover, housed together with the suites in the original blue cloth backed, blue paper covered chemise and slipcase. She is a superb and much sought after conservator and her superb designer bindings are in collections in the UK and USA.|

Image size 43 x 25 cm (7.5 x 14 ins), Paper Size 41 x 58 cm.||An astonishing engraving of the White Bass for Schanilec’s book Lac des Pleurs, printed and published in only 100 copies by the artist under his imprint Midnight Paper Sales: a real magnum opus and a tribute in engraving and words to Lake Pepin by a modern day natural philosopher.In his boat Schanilec undertook a seven year odyssey studying the 22-mile length of the upper Mississippi River known as Lake Pepin where the Mississippi widens between Saint Paul, Minnesota and La Crosse, Wisconsin. This, the widest naturally occurring part of the river, was dubbed the “Lake of Tears” by Louis Hennepin in 1680, inspired by the tears of Indian men whose desire to kill the Frenchman was frustrated by their chief. |

The book documents the journey of Ben Verhoeven and Gaylord Schanilec into the woods surrounding Midnight Paper Sales in western Wisconsin to create a work not only about these trees, but of these trees. In all 24 species have been catalogued through image, historical anecdotes, and notes taken during the cutting, milling, engraving and printing. The book’s 53 images consist primarily of wood prints of long grain and end grain specimens which have been taken from Schanilec’s property.
