Description:
Philadelphia?: D. D. Bean & sons (Winston-Salem, North Carolina), for Taggart's auto driving schools, 1970 -- A HEART-RENDING EPHEMERON featuring a brand of low humor never funny and nowadays unthinkable: The back cover shows a caricature of a blonde woman in her 20s or 30s, with her right eye blackened and a dialogue-balloon lettered, "I'D RATHER SWITCH TO TAGGARTS [sic] THAN FIGHT WITH MY HUSBAND!" The matchbook is not dated, but it is difficult to imagine any adult thinking that this might be an effective advertisement after about 1970. The inside cover gives a 'phone number in Philadelphia and fifteen local numbers in New Jersey; the firm was apparently founded in 1957, and by 1984, we know, they had an 800-number in northern New Jersey.. 18 matches present (of 20?).. Pictorial matchbook (46 x 37 x 7 mm).
