Carthage: Carthage Press, 1923. First. VG+. Attractive scarlet and gold binding./None. Scarce as are older Missouri books dealing with the Civil War. This county was overwhelming pro-Confederate. As with nearly all of Missouri guerilla activity took front stage which led to ugly encounters by both sides. That is why the War there did not end in 1865 but carried on for the next generations. Contains many anecdotes.

Columbia, SC: The State Company, 1924. First. Hard Bound. VG+/VG. Small piece missing on the top of the back of the jacket. Pencil notation on the upper spine as there was no info on the spine when published.. Love him or hate him, General Bragg had both admirers (President Davis) and detractors (about everyone else). An excellent biography of this controversial general. Nevins II-80 states in part that it is ..." A detailed account with quotes..." Dornbusch II-2625 has this listing. OUTSTANDING TEXT IN A VERY GOOD DUSTJACKET.

NY: David McKay Co, 1974. First. Hard Cover. VG. NOT exlib. Has tape marks on lower boards likely to hold down a broadart cover. Rest excellent./Near Fine.. THIS A FIRST PRINTING WITH THE POINTS: FIVE LINES AT TOP AND FIVE AT BOTTOM OF COPYRIGHT PAGE, NO ADDITIONAL PRINTINGS LISTED, NOTHING ON THE BACK JACKET EXCEPT A PICTURE OF THE AUTHOR. WINNER OF THE 1975 PULITZER PRIZE FOR FICTION. It took Shaara seven years to write this novel and submission to 16 publishers before it was accepted. The book received little attention at first, perhaps due to the Viet Nam backlash against any mention of war. Even after winning the Pulitzer little was made of the book until the movie was made using Killer Angels as its basis. Now the book is recognized as one of few highly acclaimed Civil War novels. Not a rare book, but expensive in the first printing. Many copies over $1500 on the internet.

NY: Dial Press, 1930. First. Hard Bound within a slipcase. Overall VG. However, it has had professional work. Believe they are original boards but new spine with original title applied. Reinforced hinges. Overall tight and square. Tipped in Forrest portrait on ffep./None. But in a matching slipcase.. The author was a British Army officer who wrote other excellent narratives concerning the American Civil War. Sheppard says, "He must, of course, be considered first and foremost as a soldier...but he was also a splendid and admirable man." This bio takes him from birth to death with the meat of the narrative discussing his Civil War activities. One of the four or five must have Forrest biographies. All five plates and six sketch maps that are required are present. Civil War. Nevins I-88. Dornbusch IV-8787.

NY: Robert Grier, 1908. First. Wraps. VG-. Tied wraps. Minor chipping to front edges. Text VG+./None. This an address given before the Army of the Tennessee in St. Louis, November 11, 1908. This Sherman is the great one's son. He relates things his father told him, not a rehash of the records. Has "Dad said.." stuff.

Toledo, OH: Slocum Publishing, 1913. First. Hard Cover. Square and tight. Ex lib with pockets, etc. removed. Interior and boards are VG/VG+./None.. Slocum was a good Corps commander who served both in the East and with Sherman in the West. Slocum was commander of one of the two corps sent West by Grant. His advice to Meade at Gettysburg was to stay and fight it out, which they did. Started the War as colonel of the 27th NY Infantry. Won a BG commission at First Bull Run. Quite likely a commander whose contributions are overlooked. He assumed a heavy responsibility at Gettysburg and did extremely well.

Weston, WVA: Society of Historical Engravings, 1920. First. Hardbound. Confederate gray cloth soiled. Hinges good. Printed on vellum like paper. Minor foxing throughout./None.. A smallish, unpaginated book. Interesting printing with page borders and decorations. A very rare account of the Great One, not found in the popular bibliographies. Doubt there is anything new and startling in this volume, but a "must have" for any serious Jackson collector.

Wilmington, DE: Historical Society of Delaware, 1909. First. WRAPPERS. Covering wraps chipped and just hanging to the text./None.. WRAPPERS. A Second Army Corps unit, it was known as the "Crazy Delawares." It fought under General Richardson at the Bloody Lane where it made a highly effective charge that went unnoticed by higher echelons. Seems a real sore spot with unit members! It served in all the engagements during the Seven Days, Fredericksburg in the leading attacking elements, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (Wheat Field), Bristoe Station, and Spottsylvania. The unit's service terminated in the summer of 1864. Not in Nevins. Dornbusch II-181. Delaware stuff is hard to find, likely due to the small number of units the State fielded.

Volume Ii has heavily repaired spine and boards, but still original binding and it is tight and square. Again no foxing. Vol I wrapped in mylar, Vol II is not./See Condition.. Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1862. Third. Hard Bound. Rebound nicely. Has had some use. Text evenly toned./None.. This a third edition of 1862. Everything you might want to know about ordnance and artillery operations. Very technical with weights, sizes, ranges, etc for all types of ordnance. Chock full of tables, drawings, etc. If you are an artilleryman, you must have this manual. The manual is signed twice by a James Sullivan. The one on page 269 also has the annotation of "Mexico." My data base contains 269 Union James Sullivans so an exact pindown is impossible. The one Mexico in the U.S. that comes to mind is a town in Missouri. There was a man by that name who served in a Missouri battery. Far fetched? Probably.

n.p.: Authority of the Commission, 1905. First. Hard Cover. Book VG+, beautiful blue cloth with multi-colored decorations./None.. The Ninth New jersey served nearly all its time in the Carolinas. It took part in the engagements in that area of operations, New Berne being one of them. This book deals with the monument erected to the unit at that site. In relation to other Eastern regiments, the Ninth's losses at New Berne were light.

Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas, 1968. First. Hard bound. VG+/VG+. Very scholarly study of the effect disease had on the armies readiness. It is commonly known that far more soldiers died from disease than from combat. The auther looks at the impact illness had on readiness and several major battles. A lot of tables and statistics.

Hillsboro, TX: Hillsboro Mirror Print, 1902. First. Hard Bound. Beautifully rebound in 3/4 leather by one of the best restorers. Ex-library with nearly all the stamps. Other than one stamp within the text, marks are confined to the first three pages.Text is near fine. Priced accordingly./None.. A very rare and expensive Hood's Texas Brigade related book. The author was a member of the famed Fifth Texas Infantry, arguably in one of the best brigades on either side. "Texans always turn them" and "Lee to the rear!" are two famous incidents with this brigade. In all the major fights and fought well. Chock full of personal anecdotes. Stevens was captured at Gettysburg and served the rest of the War as a POW. Howes 970, Dornbusch II Texas-105, not in Nevins. (For a copy in its original binding, see Item # 562).

NY: Broadway Publishing, 1911. First. Hard Cover. VG-. Book has been used, but still tight and square. Archival tape repair to tear on preface page./None.. A scarce book written by a former member of the 61st Virginia Infantry. This is a series of anecdotes and not a chronological account of his Confederate infantry unit. Stewart was the unit's lieutenant colonel where he was wounded three times; at Chancellorsville, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. He was a successful business man following the War. The 61st was assigned to the famous Mahone's Brigade. It is likely Stewart's efforts mirrored those of Hunter McGuire in writing a Southern history for the Southern youth. The fear was that the history of the South was being written by the Northern press and contained its bias. Nevins I-163: Written by the 61st' commander. Good on Lee's campaigns in 1864-65. Dornbusch II-1492. Mostly a compilation of letters from Confederate soldiers. VG. ****.

NY: Neale Publishing, 1930. First. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Likely one of the last Civil War related Neale publications. Also rare in that it has a decided Union flavor unlike the bulk of their work. The author endlessly praises the Union efforts and senior military leadership while ripping the Confederate cause, military operations, and senior commanders. I have seen it described as a "diatribe." As nice a copy as you could find. Near fine dust jacket and signed/inscribed by the author.

Washington City: G.M. Van Buren, 1883. Probable Second. Wraps. G+. Book was used but still together nicely. Wrap covers neatly relaid./None.. The author wrote several books, in fact, he may have extracted portions of this book for publication under separate cover; i.e., The List of Battles. An unusual book that is a consolidation of several subjects. Of major importance is the list of surgeons (Union) as a search for their information is a very time consuming and frustrating task. The surgeons are listed by state and numerically by unit. There are several pages on USCT surgeons also. This is a Union book and contains no Confederate information.

Providence: Show and Farham, 1901. First. HB. Royal blue cloth with still nice gold lettering. Hinges nice, some wear around edges of the boards./No Jacket. This a three month outfit, best service at Fredericksburg. Book has roster and many photos of unit members. Book likely once owned by Private William Bouton of Company I, 6th Rhode Island Infantry.
