Sale was an American character actress whose career spanned six decades, during most of which she played older women. Over the 46 years she was active as an actress, she worked in films, stage, radio and television. She was famous for her one-woman stage show, Americana Sketches-on which this book is based-which she did for more than 1, 000 performances during a 15-year span. She was married to actor and studio executive Sam Wren, and co-starred with him in one of the first television family comedies, Wren's Nest, in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She gave birth to fraternal twins, Virginia and Christopher, in 1936. Later in her career she worked on television, and in commercials. This book, with a lavish gift inscription to a visitor to the city, was signed by William Merriless, the chief constable of Edinburgh from 1950 to 1968. It is the second printing (1948) of the book, so was obviously signed sometime from 1950 on. Merrilees OBE QPM (24 September 1898 – 21 August 1984) is one of Scotland's best known policemen, thanks to a flamboyant career involving disguise, celebrated court cases, and continual charity work. Known as "the pocket-sized detective with a battleship reputation," he was featured in the youth comic book Valiant, and painted twice by Henry Raeburn Dobson. In November 1959 he appeared on This is your Life, hosted by Eamonn Andrews, and in 1966, his memoirs "The Short Arm of the Law" were published by John Long of London.Only five feet, six inches tall, four inches under police recruit requirement regulations, Merrilees nonetheless made a big impression, steadily advancing through the ranks. We believe this Charles Sanderson was chief librarian of the Toronto Public Library from 1937 to 1956. This copy - which was bought in Ottawa, Ontario, at an annual book sale in the village of Rockcliffe - was probably acquired when, after running for six months to packed houses in New York, Sherwood took the play on the road in November across the U.S. and into Canada (The play ran until Nov. 2 in New York, so it's possible Sanderson could have got it there, as well). Upon seeing the play in Canada, Prime Minister MacKenzie King said it encouraged him to speak candidly to Americans about the coming war. Sherwood himself was no stranger to Canada.
