Description:
Picador, Feb 2009. needs moral rights clause when e-book published. Paperback. I first came across Oliver Sacks in a doctor's waiting room. There, lying on the table, was a copy of his first book, "Migraine". Since I suffer from bad headaches, I picked it up and started reading. Thoroughly intrigued by the elegantly written case studies it contained, I asked the doctor if I could borrow it, took it home, and finished it that evening. I then began to notice that Mr. Sacks periodically wrote articles for the New Yorker on strange neurological cases, and every time one came out I read it with delectation. So when I saw Mr. Sack's book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" at my local bookstore I bought it immediately.\r\n\r\nI was not let down. The book is a fascinating compendium of neurological case studies, classified into four parts: Losses, Excesses, Transports, The World of the Simple. Mr. Sacks takes us on a journey through a series of neurological disturbances with extreme effects.… Read more

Description:
Picador, Mar 1991. New ed of 2 Revised ed. Paperback. It hardly seems fair that so many great doctors are also great writers. Perhaps it's qualities like sensitivity, craft and dedication that keep physicians like Oliver Sacks in hospitals all day and at writing desks all night; if nothing else, these qualities shine in books like "Awakenings". This powerful set of case histories rises above its pathological foundation to find new literary territory, a medical-spiritual synthesis equally stimulating for the mind and the soul. It's no wonder Hollywood chose to turn it into a feature film--anyone can see the universal human struggle against bondage and despair in these pages.\nThe sleeping-sickness epidemic of 1918 caused hundreds of survivors to slip into a bizarre rigid paralysis with similarities to advanced Parkinson's disease. These patients, only occasionally able to communicate or move, were nearly all institutionalised for life, their ranks increasing every now and then with similarly afflicted… Read more

Description:
Picador, Oct 1997. New edition. Paperback. This was described as two books in one but there seemed like at least three strands to the subject matter. In fact the chapters were broken down into four long chapters; the first two tell of the indigenous peoples predisposition to a rare type of genetic colour blindness. Sacks travels with a western colleage who also has this condition along with expert knowledge.\r\n\r\nThe third (mammoth) chapter was unexpected from the title which is the chief reason why I didn't rate this book more highly. As a neurologist, Sacks cannot resist the temptation here to launch into a huge digression of a further medical curiosity peculiar to the islands (a disease/s of the brain, often affecting the rest of the body with time.) Sacks is expert here and writes competently, but this was not the story I bought the book for. If you like neurology stories, another of his books (the man who mistook his wife for a hat) is recommended.\r\n\r\nFinally, the last and smallest chapter… Read more

Description:
Macdonald Futura, Mar 1981. Reprinted. Hardcover. In Cosmos, Sagan's triumph as a masterly writer climaxes in this universal masterpiece. The visionary scientist and writer takes us on a powerful and epic journey of discovery, awakening the imagination and stirring the spirit. Even when discussing extremely complex issues and scientific phenomena such as Einstein's theory of relativity, Sagan is able to keep us transfixed on the subject with his unique writing style which keeps readers of all persuasions and levels of experience completely interested and informed. Cosmos is a tour de force, and in my opinion goes beyond the works of people like Stephen Hawking, Marcus Chown and Patrick Moore in terms of its imaginative power and easy impartation of the facts. From beginning to end, we are inspired, enthralled and, most of all, educated. 'Cosmos' is an absolute necessity for anyone studying astronomy - novice, amateur or professional, and is great value for money because it will be read time and time again.

Description:
Collins, Apr 1996. Har/Com. Hardcover. A very useful package of 2 CDs and book that cover most, if not all, the birds of Britain. \nThe book describes the birds calls and if they are on the CDs, as most are, a track number is given.\nThere are a few birds missing from the CDs, which is a shame, but the 2 disks are full. \nA number of birds of prey are missing, and a few Warblers are not included, but maybe they will turn up on Geoff Samples next book/CD that deals just with them.\nOther than that, having loads of birds on CD is very useful, as you can skip through tracks with easy.\nThe recording quality is very good, and with a whispering voice by Geoff telling you what bird is what, it feels like you are there in the field.\nIts very relaxing too !

Description:
HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, Mar 1992. New Ed. Paperback. A book of two halves, the first being fast, exciting, full of intrigue where you want to simply read and read to get to the conclusion. Then it stalls. The second half of the book is more about the character Lucas Davenport and his psychological and relationship problems. It seemed as though the first half had been planned but not the second. If you've read other Sandford's like Winter Prey or Secret Prey and hope for the same, then you'll be disappointed. On it's own it is good. The story is original, the pace is mostly right. Characters are interesting and it has enough action, romance, etc to keep you hooked. The problem is more the high quality of his other books and this just doesn't quite make the grade.

Description:
Jonathan Cape Ltd, Mar 2001. Hardcover. Robert Sapolsky, the author of "Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" and other popular books on animal and human behaviour, decided early on in life to become a primatologist, volunteering at the American Museum of Natural History and badgering his high-school principal to let him study Swahili in order to prepare for travel in Africa. When he set out to conduct fieldwork as a young graduate student, though, he found that life among a Kenyan baboon troop was decidedly different from his earlier bookish studies. Among other things, he confesses, he had to become a master of shooting anesthetic darts into his subjects with a blowgun in order to take blood samples, a mastery that required him to become "a leering slinky silent quicksilver baboon terror". He also had to learn how to negotiate the complexities of baboon politics, endure the difficulties of life in the bush, and subsist on cases of canned mackerel and beans.\n His memoir is, in the main, quite humorous,… Read more
